District 9 movie review

District 9 Movie Review
Student’s Name
District 9 is a 2009 movie whose director is a South-African born in Canada by the
name Neill Blomkamp. He is a film producer, animator and screenwriter, and he directed the
movie from its beginning to the end. He was born on 17
th
September 1979. The director employs
a technique that involves blending of effects that are natural as well as those that are computer
generated. District 9 is a movie that brings out the possibility of the existence of aliens. It
asserts that aliens from another system visited South Africa, which is a region on the earth. The
population of the aliens who visited the earth bore the name “The Prawns.” About three decades
later, the very first warm welcome by the human population faded and the camp belonging to
refugees were the aliens lived deteriorated into a militarized local residence by the name District
9.
The aliens are highly exploited and misused in this refugee camp. Munitions Corporation
is tasked with the forceful eviction of the alien population under the command of an operative
named Wikus van der Merwe. Wikus, who is the protagonist in the movie, is exposed to a
chemical from the aliens that is strange to the earth’s population, and as such, has to rely on the
help of his two friends who were “prawns.” The movie is written by Blomkamp and Terri
Tatchell. It has been produced by Carolynne Cunningham and Peter Jackson. The antagonist of
the movie is a man by the name Koobus Venter. He is an agent of multi-national United (MNU)
who has been sent to District 9 to make all possible efforts of finding Wikus van der Merwe.
Koobus Venter takes charge of the first battalion that reacts to Wikus’ actions.
The most intriguing part can be explained as the theme of the movie. The core message is
brought out in the manner in which humans handle the prawns. Humans are indifferent towards
the visit of the prawns which accounts for the reason behind their allocation in the remote area
by the name district 9. Humans are biased and bigoted against the aliens from the beginning of
the whole idea. Forces that are armed directly open fire which is meant to directly provoke the
prawns. The head of the security division (antagonist) appeals for all the possible reasons to
warrant the shooting of prawns. According to majority of the natives, prawns are unclean and all
forms of injustice should be unleashed to them.
Wikus, the protagonist, does not see the injustices unleashed to the prawns until the
prawns become his adversaries. Wikus realizes that humans are wired in a way that they cannot
co-exist with anything that does not appear natural to them. Anything alien is not acceptable by
the human population. Wikus also gets to learn that humans hate what they do not understand
instead of accepting it for change. This means that the movie brings home a very important point
about the human aspect to loath change in their lives. Wikus projects his emotions to the
audience by bringing out the immense danger of being in terror absolutely. The movie gets to a
point where the real differences between people on the two divides get evident. District 9
movie can be said to be written well, beautifully, and immersive although some gaps in the
movie’s plot are evident. The movie is also educative and generally interesting to watch.
