“District 9” is a 2009 movie whose director is a South-African born in Canada by the
name Neill Blomkamp. He is a film producer, animator and screenwriter, and he directed the
movie from its beginning to the end. He was born on 17
th
September 1979. The director employs
a technique that involves blending of effects that are natural as well as those that are computer
generated. “District 9” is a movie that brings out the possibility of the existence of aliens. It
asserts that aliens from another system visited South Africa, which is a region on the earth. The
population of the aliens who visited the earth bore the name “The Prawns.” About three decades
later, the very first warm welcome by the human population faded and the camp belonging to
refugees were the aliens lived deteriorated into a militarized local residence by the name District
9.
The aliens are highly exploited and misused in this refugee camp. Munitions Corporation
is tasked with the forceful eviction of the alien population under the command of an operative
named Wikus van der Merwe. Wikus, who is the protagonist in the movie, is exposed to a
chemical from the aliens that is strange to the earth’s population, and as such, has to rely on the
help of his two friends who were “prawns.” The movie is written by Blomkamp and Terri
Tatchell. It has been produced by Carolynne Cunningham and Peter Jackson. The antagonist of
the movie is a man by the name Koobus Venter. He is an agent of multi-national United (MNU)
who has been sent to District 9 to make all possible efforts of finding Wikus van der Merwe.
Koobus Venter takes charge of the first battalion that reacts to Wikus’ actions.
The most intriguing part can be explained as the theme of the movie. The core message is
