Introduction
Often, there are cases that arise which normally leads to accidents in the sea. The accidents
always either cause injury or death to the divers. Ideally, there is no immunity to the calamities
arising in the sea in as much as corrections towards the potential sources of threat can be done.
The calamities and accidents can only be mitigated to an extent but not wholly. The following is
brief discussion of the major challenges and suffering faced by divers in the Gulf region.
Physical environment
The surrounding environment along the Gulf is not favourable for human beings’
habitation since the space was quite small due to the Law which was imposed by the British in the
last century (Al Fahim, 1995). Ideally, the size of the boats was particularly small which could
carry approximately six people. Furthermore, during some seasons, these vessels were forced to
carry extra people which could overload the whole boat and in the process cases of capsizing would
emerge as the end results. Furthermore, due to overcrowding of the boat by food supplies, water,
diving gear, small spaces were converted into sitting room for the men (Nokhetha, 2018). For that
reason, sleeping in the process was rather a very difficult affair and people could spend sleepless
nights or they could sleep on oysters which majorly affected their health in general (Mathad, 2018).
In addition to that, there was change in the environment within the boat since the levels of the heat
rose which was also accompanied by the change of the humidity within due to the high number of
people on board.
Food
Life in Gulf could be worsened by lack of the sufficient food. Men in the Gulf, could open
the oysters in the evening which were harvested during when the take was plentiful. Ideally, men

could only eat once during the day since it was challenge an almost impossible do dive with a
stomach full of food. Due to this phenomena man lost lots of their teeth due to malnourishment
due to small quantity of food. The type of the food which was majorly taken was fish and rice
which was also insufficient to the people in Gulf (Al Fahim, 1995). Furthermore, the type of the
water was unclear making it difficult for the divers to have a better life in the Gulf whereby at the
same time mousse could sometimes fell in food tanks.
Weather
The weather conditions in the Gulf was unfavourable to the men in that the wind was strong
making is it difficult to dive through and in the process, they had to spend a lot of time trying to
dive. Furthermore, the type of the equipment which was being used was poorly constructed to
counter the wave currents resulting from the strong wind. The above could be attributed to the
poor technology was used in the process of construction of the vessels.
Health
The health status of the divers was so much compromised due to the situation in the Gulf.
The number of the men plus the poor sanitation which was encountered together with the lack of
sufficient food placed the health of the men in jeopardy. For that reason, the immune system of
the men became weak hence being vulnerable to the various diseases being caused by the
microorganisms in the environment of the Gulf (Villiers, 1940). Amongst the ailments witnessed
was eye sickness which affected the sight that was more vital for the activities being propagated
in the gulf. Due to these most the men were unable to carry on their duties effectively hence the
output was below the threshold level set for each day (Villiers, 1940). Ideally, because of that, they
continued to suffer due to little food to take. In addition to that, cases of skin diseases were rampant
due to the poor sanitation resulting from the harsh environmental conditions which affected their

daily production. Cases of loose teeth was also witnessed which made it difficult for the affected
to consume the available meal comfortably which compromised their immune system exposing
them to other serious ailments. Generally, they suffered a lot in the Gulf not necessarily because
they did not had medication but its due to the use of unapproved and inefficient traditional form
of treatment. The traditional mode of treatment could do partially, but it exposed them to more
risks in that it was branded with iron which is majorly known to increase the levels of blood but
not treating the disease in question.
Work time
Apart from the above outlined challenges the working time was long which was
approximately 12 hours per day and sometimes it could exceed that (Al Fahim, 1995). This really
affected their health in the brain was not guaranteed enough resting time which hampered their
daily activities in the days that preceded under deplorable conditions. At every diving site there
are situations that arise which can result in an accident befalling. No site is immune, not even the
Rescue Team's site. When divers start believing that they are immune then dangerous situations
arise. Learn to recognize and correct potential problems before they happen. Accidents occur in
six problem areas. for long hours but the due to the poor working conditions they could come back
home with insufficient products and the rewards for that was little in terms of money. Due to the
less amount managed per day they ended up having a cycle of spiralling debts which was a
quagmire and difficult to avoid making it hard to sustain their families. In addition to the long
working hours, the payment was not being made in right time whereby the products had to be
traded to the available merchants in the market who could rathe pay them after exporting the
products and managing to sell them. To add salt on the wound, 10% of the output went to the

owner of the ship/boat with 20% being allocated for the supplies (Villiers, 1940). The remaining
amount was shared amongst the workers of the boat which relied majorly on the position one is in.
Safety/ security
The issue of the security was also another element that really jeopardized the lifestyle of
the residents in the Gulf. For instance, there was numerous cases which recorded in line with the
attacks by the animals in the process of diving. The workers of the boat were inflicted with a lot
of phobia but since they had to feed their families and themselves they had no option but to risk
their lives (Al Fahim, 1995). By doing that, a significant number of them lost their lives or got
injured in the process by the animals in that environment. Furthermore, the issue of the pirates
derailed the living conditions of the divers since their boat could be hijacked by the pirates. Due
to that phenomena, the divers ended up losing their products at the same time being killed and
harassed by the pirates posing threat and imparting stress to the families of the divers. At some
instances, there were cases of poisoning which also lead to health complications and with deaths
at some points.
Emotions
In addition to that, due to the frustrating kind of lifestyle in the shores, the emotions of the
divers were compromised a lot. This could be attributed to the presence of some ghosts in the Gulf
which inflicted a lot fear amongst the divers. Due to that, the divers were unable to carry on their
duties at an expected rate since some areas were the hotspots for the ghost and even when they
were diving in search of the products, the confidence and safety got scuttled by the element of
ghost in their minds. Along the process, the divers could miss their family members since the time
of return was not predictable leading lack of peace and love amongst them and their kin (Al Fahim,
1995). The time for going back to the family was rather difficult to ascertain since the distances

covered sometimes were long and the same time the vessels being used could develop some
mechanical problems in the process leading to delay. Furthermore, the divers got exhausted in the
process due to excess work being allocated to them and sometimes they could say goodbye to their
kin with peers and never return to home due to some of the challenges encountered along the
journey.
