Do you Agree it is Necessary to Learn Foreign Languages?
Multilingualism has become more than just `necessary’ in today’s era. The impact that
originates from any language both in spoken and written form constitutes the mainstay of any
race, creed, and region of the world. Viewed in financial, social, and business perspective,
having the capability to communicate in a foreign language helps an individual establish real
connections with other people and revitalizes a better understanding of own language.
Why is necessary to learn foreign languages? Learning foreign languages give an
individual an upper hand in more business, international trading, and employment opportunities.
For instance, approximately 5.5 billion people around the world speak English language but what
about the other 5.5 billion people who can’t speak in any English language at all and they want
to either conduct international trade, business, or seek employment in Dominant English
country? Then, the necessity of learning the English language as a foreign language in this
scenario comes in place. Wong argues that “although English is the widely spoken language in
the world and with ever-increasing levels of international trade, business, random cross-cultural
experiences, and immigration, there are chances that one will eventually come face-to-face with
someone else who doesn’t speak English to a level of understanding each other” (1).
Most companies look and select job seekers who possess foreign language skills. The
reason behind this selection criterion is to have an individual who has an added advantage to
understand the needs of overseas clients. An individual with foreign language skills will be

beneficial in propelling special recognition and promotions to international markets. The
employer will be able to improve customer services, encourage staff performance, and increase
revenue from foreign markets. Foreign language is also necessary for enhancing cognitive and
analytical abilities (De Valoes). Individuals with foreign language skills can embrace self-worth
among job mates and social groups.
With those argument waylaid above, and others not discussed, it can be summed that
learning foreign languages is very necessary to anyone who wants to be explicitly competitive
and suit best in either in the job market, international trade, technology, government
opportunities, business, marketing or in the multi-cultural and social world.
