Domestic policy is widely used in describing a variety of issues, including social welfare,
healthcare, personal rights, natural resources, law enforcement, and legislation. It is referred to
be courses of actions and plans national government takes that cover internal issues of the
country. It affects the manner in which every citizen of the country lives day to day. This paper
aims at discussing domestic problems the United States of America is facing, identifying types of
domestic policy, main examples of domestic policy and role of president in solving the problems.
The federal government through consultations with state and local governments develops
domestic policy and affairs of United States of America. These affairs and policy have
significance in that they deal with critical issues such as education, healthcare, natural resources,
energy, taxation, personal freedoms, social welfare, and public safety. Their goal is to minimize
dissatisfaction and unrest among nation’s citizens by stressing on areas that are important such as
improving healthcare and law enforcement.
Body
Domestic policies in Unites States of America are divided into various main categories.
These policies govern the U.S government, care and guide citizens, and enforce laws by keeping
them in right track. The first main policy is Regulatory that aims at maintaining social order by
forbidding actions and behaviors that endanger citizens. To accomplish this goal, laws, and
policies that restrict companies, people, and groups helps in stopping doing things endangering
political and social order. For example, issues such as creation of policies to deter people from
abusing drugs or administration of voting procedures.
Distributive policy ensures fair provision of taxpayer-supported government benefits,
services, and goods to all groups, corporations, and individuals. Therefore, its concern is to

provide services and goods that are administered by municipal agencies to several organizations.
The services and goods such as public roadways, welfare, public education, and safety are paid
for by tax of citizens. This policy creates no competition for the services and goods.
Redistributive policy has a focus on nation’s wealth that should be shared equally. Tax in
the organization that has received the dollars through distributive policy is moved to other
organizations. This redistribution of taxes is done to eliminate hostile social issues like poverty.
In this case, government leaders use this policy in enhancing power of one group over another or
gaining advantages in other government’s budget issues. However, in most cases this policy has
been used so many times with an intention of favoring the rich people because sometimes no
finance allocation is done. It is the most controversial policy because it can be used in enhancing
power of a specific group over another.
Constituent Policy aims on creation of agencies of the government that helps in providing
services to citizens. This policy creates high executive power agencies to work in the
government as its agent. For instance, new agencies or departments were created with an
intention of dealing with taxes and administering Social Security plan. Consequently, it is
concerned with fiscal policy, responsible for new department development, law, creating public
servant rules and distributing funds internally.
There are various examples of domestic policies and affairs in the U.S government.
Muslim surveillance is one example that helps in preventing terror attacks that are usually from
Islamic extremists living in their country. The federal government and enforcement agencies of
United States should increase Muslim surveillance to ensure no terror attacks.
DOMESTIC POLICY AND AFFAIRS 4
Gun control is a domestic policy example that ensures safety in the country. Rights of gun
ownership are protected by the Second U.S Amendment but restrictions should be placed on
their purchase and owning firearms among citizens.
Term limits as a domestic policy example that should be created for U.S Congress
members to ensure good relationship between government and its citizens. Frequent reelections
making some members to stand in the government causes problems between citizens and
government as those who have stood out are not willing to step down for change. Imposing term
limits on Congress can only be done by amending the Constitution.
Immigration is another example of United States domestic affairs and policies. Policies
should be made to avoid illegal immigration into the US and the immigrants already existing
should be deported and not acquiring citizenship. Countries that harbor terrorists into the U.S
should be fully banned.
Social security as a domestic policy and affairs example should be prevented by raising
minimum retirement age. Drug Enforcement Policy is another example that should be taken into
account. The war on drugs should still go on and federal government should not follow trend of
legalizing recreational and medical use of marijuana.
The president of the U.S has a role in directly prompting and taking care of Domestic
policies. The actions he takes will majorly affect the economy and law of the country. The
Congress creates laws and the president is primarily responsible in ensuring their creation; the
federal agencies create federal regulations. These laws and regulations are created fairly and
wholly enforced through the influence of the president. For instance, regulatory agencies such as
environment-protecting EPA and consumer-protecting Federal Trade Commission fall under
executive branch authority.
DOMESTIC POLICY AND AFFAIRS 4
National budget creation requires huge undertaking and a president’s decision on how funds
should be spent determines an increase or decrease of taxes. The president has a role of
overseeing how services, programs, and military are funded and making a choice that will
enormously affect lives of Americans. For example, if defense spending is increased, welfare
programs may decrease. Therefore, a president is responsible of directly levying tariffs and
cutting taxes on exports and imports.
The president controls the economy of the United States. His efforts directly influence
domestic policy areas such as money-dependent redistributive and distributive. In addition, the
president molds annual federal budget, influences foreign policy, and proposes increase or
decrease of tax. These responsibilities greatly determine the amount of money available used to
fund many domestic programs that affect lives of American citizens.
