DRIVERS OF HIGH PERFORMANCE2
Drivers of High Performance
The medical or orthopedic unit that I work in prioritizes high quality of health care to its
patients. As well, the medical unit works to ensure that there is efficient use of health care
resources (Borkowski & Deckard, 2013). For instance, a cardiology patient can be placed in the
orthopedic unit if there is no space available in the cardiology unit at the time of the admission of
the patient. This ensures that there is an efficient use of hospital resources (bed), and high quality
care is provided to the patient in the satellite bed.
Also, the orthopedic unit that I work in embraces an orientation program for newly hired
registered nurses in a bid to ensure that high quality health care is offered to orthopedic patients
(Hickey, et al, 2012). The program aims at quality and safety improvement in the medical unit
because the newly hired nurses need to be familiar with the facility and its patients in order to
deliver safe and high quality medical care.
In most cases, orthopedic patients, especially those needing orthopedic surgery do not
afford the cost of the treatment because of its expensive nature. However, the orthopedic unit
that I work in works on ensuring the treatment is affordable. The unit provides subsidized care
on referral either by an accident and emergency department or by a polyclinic (Haseltine, 2013).
For good measure, the unit focuses on specific medical treatment and problems such as
orthopedic surgeries of torn ligaments, osteoarthritis and cubital tunnel syndrome among other
orthopedic conditions. Since the health care facility is a government clinic, it is continually
expanded and upgraded as well as subsidized by the government in order to keep up with the
growing needs and financial ability of orthopedic patients.
