Abstract
The social and historical foundations of education are indeed established by the collective
efforts of individuals. However, as Moreland demonstrates in his Biblical Principles Related to
Education textbook, even one person can make a difference. The field of education has
witnessed tremendous changes over the years, which have primarily been orchestrated by
individual actions. The religious background of a change executor plays a significant role in
shaping his or her education landscape. Christianity explicitly relies on the teachings of the
Scripture to set forth the necessary instruments for learning acquisition. The aim of this paper is
to integrate 10 of the 44 Biblical Principles Related to Education’s doctrines and examine their
spiritual development and foundations with the aim of growing a person into an effective
Christian educator.
EDUCATION 3
Recovery of Knowledge
Biblical Principle #11 states that Each person has a conscience that responds both to God
and to the world. An essential understanding of the knowledge is that it must be exercised
through righteousness, self-control, and judgment. The scripture tells us in Acts 24: 25 that when
Paul appeared before Governor Felix, he spoke with righteousness, self-control and judgment
and this made his judge feel afraid. Although Paul had been accused of violence and incitement,
deep inside his mind, he knew that the accusations were false. He had a clear conscience that
acutely responded to God and the world. This is given the fact that he maintained that his course
was to preach the resurrection of the dead, which was exemplified by none other than God
Himself, through His Son Jesus Christ. This stance by Paul sent shivers down Felix’s spine. As
Christians, we are called upon to preach the gospel of resurrection with confidence regardless of
all the hurdles put along our way by non-believers (Moreland, 2009).
A critical aspect of recovery of knowledge is the crucial role played by pastors in
disseminating the Word of God. There has been a lot of confusion on the role of the church in
upholding societal morals. Many times, church leaders have made news headlines for engaging
in ungodly acts and subsequently lead their followers astray. However, if all can follow Paul’s
examples of exercising self-control, righteousness, and judgment, they will succeed in bringing
as many people to Christ.
Biblical Principle #43 states that Parents are responsible for training their children in
God’s ways. Parents are advised to in the training and instructions of the Lord instead of
exasperating them. Proverbs 13:24 states that those who spare the rod hate their children, but
those who love them are careful to discipline them.
EDUCATION 4
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge is for parents to discipline their
children whenever they go wrong and teach them the ways of the Lord.
Biblical Principle #16 states that love and kindness function to destroy the basis of anger,
resentment and other negative dispositions. The Bible is very clear in the book of Proverbs 15:1-
2 that a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. A fundamental
understanding of this knowledge is that knowledge dispensation requires wisdom. One needs to
be wise and gentle to convey the message of God biblically. Verse 2 states that the tongue of the
wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. Therefore, we can only be good
teachers if we learn to communicate his teachings in a gentle and wise manner. This does not
involve judging others because in the book of Romans 2:4, God illustrates that his kindness,
patience and forbearance is intended to lead us to repentance (Clark, 2000).
A critical aspect of the recovery of knowledge is on relationships. When disagreements
arise among families, work mates, couples, sometimes we have allowed ourselves to be
consumed by anger and end up with throwing insults at each other or hurling unprintable
profanities. We forget that we are God’s servants here on earth. We need to turn around and
ensure that our actions, utterances, and deeds should be a manifestation of His kindness,
patience, and forbearance.
Renovation of the Soul
Biblical Principle #21 states that the natural mind cannot understand the things of the
spirit. A key to understanding this knowledge is accepting the Spirit of God guides people to act
in some ways, and this can only be understood by a person of the Spirit. However, the devil has
blinded the minds of non-believers and prevented them from seeing the light of the gospel as
illustrated in II Corinthians 4:4. Apparently, it is this same light that should display God’s image,
EDUCATION 5
which happens to be Jesus Christ. In John 14:16-17, Jesus promised to His disciples that if they
keep His Commandments, He will ask the Father to give them the advocate, the Spirit of truth.
Therefore, if we choose to live a godly life, we shall invite the Spirit into our lives to guide us.
Apparently, this Spirit cannot be comprehended by a natural mind (Pazmin
̃
o, God our teacher:
theological basics in Christian education, 2001).
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge is the mission of Christians. We are
living in difficult times that is full of temptations. The devil is always distracting Christians from
achieving their goal of righteousness, and it appears that he is winning big time. It is against this
backdrop that Christians should invite the Spirit of the truth into their lives to help fight their
wars.
Biblical Principle #28 states that People are motivated to be self-governing. The Bible
teaches to be pure and self-governing. However, Paul affirms that our self-governing should give
us power, love, and self-discipline instead of making us timid. This calls for all Christians to give
real testimonies about the Lord without an iota of shame. Self-governing involves exercising
self-control in your actions as a Christian. The book of Job 31:1 explicitly illustrate how Job
exercise self-governance by making a covenant with his eyes not to look at virgin with lustful
eyes. People without self-governance are described as wicked and are destined for ruin and
disaster. Self-governance is not only confined to our sexual desires but also in the kinds of foods
we should eat as Christians. Daniel was very careful not to defile himself with royal wine and
food, which were not Godly. Self-governance directly involves devotion to the study and
observance of the Law of the Lord as Ezra did (Moreland, 2009).
EDUCATION 6
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge requires Christians to be alert and
sober-minded and recognize that the devil always sprawl around like a lion looking for someone
to devour. We must exercise not to fall by his wayside.
Biblical Principle #15 states that disequilibrium is a primary catalyst for learning. Jesus
used parables in most of his teachings. The use of parables was not only a fulfillment of earlier
prophecies but also a way arousing the curiosity of the His listeners. Since not many people
understood the parables, they would follow Jesus to seek to know the deep meaning of what he
meant by particular parables. However, one unique thing with the parables of Jesus was that they
were premised on commonly available things like the mustard seed, weddings, and servanthood,
which only needed to be unwrapped to find out their treasures. It demonstrates that God requires
us to put a little effort to find out the treasures he has for us. When Joshua sent hi twelve
appointees to river Jordan to carry stone, he did it as a sign to demonstrate the cutting of the flow
of the river (Gutek, 2013).
A critical aspect of the recovery of knowledge is the significant role played by the
learner. As learners, we must not expect all the process to be smooth. We must be ready to look
beyond the face value of the learning content to unpack its treasure. Additionally, teachers need
to be wise in their dealings with learners. It is not advisable to spoon feed learners but rather
teach them in the ways of the Lord in such a way that you stretch their imaginations so as to
engage fully.
Restoration of the Kingdom’s Miraculous Power
Biblical Principle #31 states that Each person is created with some type of inherent
“knowledge structure. From the very beginning, God mandated man to name all the wild
animals and all the birds in the sky that He had created. The fact that man named all the animals
EDUCATION 7
and birds demonstrate that we were created with some internal knowledge structure.
Additionally, God established a covenant with the house of Israel to put laws in their minds and
to write them in their hearts. This shows that the followers of Jesus are inherently ordained with
God’s knowledge. This knowledge is apparently inborn and can be passed to someone’s
offspring (Pazmin
̃
o, 2002).
A vital aspect of the recovery of this knowledge involves the critical role played by
parents. It is the responsibility of parents to be their children’s first teachers. They ought to teach
their children that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, as was illustrated by King
Solomon.
Biblical Principle #37 states that people are created to please God and to be pleased in
pleasing God. A critical understanding of this knowledge involves the followers of Jesus Christ
who are instructed to live in such a way that they please God. Paul singles out that if we avoid
sexual immorality, then we are pleasing God. He goes ahead to reinforce to the Corinthians that
we should ensure that our number one objective is to please God, whether at home through the
body or away. All Christians are therefore called upon to strive to please God by every of their
actions (Pazmin
̃
o, Basics of teaching for Christians: preparation, instruction, and evaluation,
1998).
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge is to all parents to teach their children
what it takes to please God. Children should learn the fruits and virtues of the Holy Spirit when
they are still young so as to grow with the knowledge. It is only when they conceptualize these
ways of pleasing God that they will develop into responsible citizens.
Biblical Principle #40 states that people are created as social beings. God created Eve
because He saw it wise for Adam to have a companion. It is not good for man to be alone. I will
EDUCATION 8
make a helper suitable for him. This implies that God created in us the aspect of social beings.
No one could have elaborated this better than King Solomon when he stated that two are better
than one for warmth, companionship, and help (Gutek, 2013).
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge is the relationship between couples.
They should understand that their relationship was made in heaven. God purposed man to be
with a woman from the first days of creation for companionship, love, and helper. It is, therefore,
safe to say that marriages were made in heaven.
Biblical principle #41 states that growth comes through overcoming resistance. Eve was
deceived by the serpent to eat the fruit which God had forbidden them to eat. She failed to resist
the temptation from the devil. God tells us to be glory in our sufferings since suffering produces
perseverance, hope and character. It is through trials that God tests our faiths and this produces
perseverance.
A critical aspect of the recovery of this knowledge is for all Christians to understand that
their sufferings could just be ways through which the Lord intends them to be resolute.
