Effective Leadership
Leadership refers to a process of influencing a group of people, workers or employees to
achieve the predetermined objectives of an organization cohesively and coherently. Leadership
requires making effective decisions, establishing and articulating the vivid or precise vision,
creating achievable goals and offering knowledge and necessary tools for workers to achieve the
intended organizational goals or objectives. Effective leadership requires a leader who has
excellent administration and communication skills, self-confidence, innovative and creative
thinking ability, persistence, willing to accept changes, risks, and reactive during a crisis
(Mumford, Partlow, & Medeiros, 2013).
Bill Gates has both inspirational and charismatic features. Additionally, success and
popularity of Bill Gates in his leadership efforts originates from his intelligent, sociable,
determinant, high integrity, competent and skillful features. Besides, his substantial contribution
to the Microsoft Company, Bill Gates has significant effects on the whole world. His visionary
and strategic leadership style has assisted in the positive achievement of the Microsoft Company.
The vision and foresight of Bill Gates concerning personal computing have played a central
responsibility in the establishment and success of his software and Microsoft Company. The
success of Microsoft Windows or operating system (OS) globally depends on Bill Gates’
exceptional leadership (Hough & Serfontein, 2012). Besides Bill Gates, effective leadership of
Warren Buffett depends on his optimism in organizational operations. He inspires his workers’
emotions consistently. Therefore, this paper seeks to explore the practical leadership styles of
Bill Gates in the Microsoft Company.
Even though Bill Gates has transformational and charismatic leadership traits, he lacked
proper employee relation. He has controlling nature hinders the relation ability of his

subordinate. He exerts pressure on employees to improve performance which in turns resulted in
his unpopularity among the workers.
Though there are numerous leadership styles like delegation, autocratic, transformational,
and task-oriented, however, the paradigm of Fielder suggest that there are relation-oriented and
task-oriented leaders. Bill Gates uses task-oriented leadership style in managing operations of his
company (Kearney & Marggraf, 2014). He expects better performance from his employees to
achieve objectives of the company. Bill Gates has a vast in the company’s operations. Therefore,
he participates in the critical decision-making process of the software industry.
Transactional and transformational leadership
Even though the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Microsoft industry,
Bill Gates used to punish or reprimand poor performance and reward employees who perform
better: transactional leadership, particularly during the initial stages of the company. Recently, he
changed to a transformational leader through appealing attempts to his workers. He used
strategies such as support and inspiration to attract or entice emotions of all staffs in the company
(Hough & Serfontein, 2012). Through his transformational and visionary leadership styles, Bill
Gates has introduced numerous modifications in the company. He modified the computing
company. Regarding the trait approach paradigm, which states that some people are born with
leadership traits, Bill Gates has various leadership features such as skillfulness, sociable, high
integrity, competitiveness, determination, and intelligence.
Delegation
The CEO of the Microsoft Company has acknowledged the significance of work
delegation to the success of the company. He created a team of qualified administrators who are
responsible for various organizational activities (Kearney & Marggraf, 2014). The achievement

of the company resulted from the high technical competence of Bill Gates as compared the
contribution of his interpersonal skills. He adopted transformational leadership skills which have
enabled him to appeal to all workers of the company through support and motivation. Bill Gates
has leadership power. As the chairperson and co-founder of the company, he applies coherent
persuasion when handling high-level administrators in the company. His capability to reward
performance has enabled him to promote positive organizational outcomes. Bill Gates has the
excellent level of professional power resulting from his subject knowledge and extensive skills in
the software industry.
Bill Gates’ leadership qualities
Precise thinking
Leaders with clear thoughts are unbeaten in their operations. The success of Bill Gates
depended on his determination. His leadership styles and commitment made him have a
competitive advantage over his rivals in the market.
Focus
Effective leaders focus on achieving organizational objectives with a specified period.
Besides, leaders encourage their employees to focus on delivering positive organizational
outcomes. Consistently, Bill Gates concentrated on making the goals of the Microsoft Company.
He valued concentration on one’s primary competence.
Innovative and passionate
Consistent innovation and desire to create perfect products plays a significant role in the
achievement of the Microsoft Company. The combination of passion and leadership skills of Bill
Gates helped in attracting highly qualified personnel because he appealed to staffs’ emotions

(Mumford, Partlow, & Medeiros, 2013). He solely developed an industry popular in establishing
software, the Microsoft Industry.
Consistent learning
Bill Gates has never stopped learning innovative ideas. Consistent education promotes
the enhancement of products’ quality. Hence, the company continuously developed new and
perfect products, which appeal to clients. A leader should strive to acquire new idea or
knowledge to ensure positive organizational achievements.
Lessons from the leadership of Bill Gates
Achievement of objectives requires one to pursue one’s passion. Bill Gates was
passionate about computer programming. Through his love for computer programing, he
managed to become the world’s most prominent leader of his company for a more extended
period. Though efforts leading to success entails numerous barriers, passion assists in providing
long-term inspiration to achieve positive results or outcomes.
Hard work
The success of Bill Gates encompasses a substantial experience in coding and
programming before the establishment of the Microsoft Company. The achievement required
vast knowledge, which he acquired through his hard work for several years of practice (Kearney
& Marggraf, 2014). The extended period practice assisted in establishing the “MS-DOS”
software, which in turn helped in the initiation and success of Microsoft. Consequently, positive
achievements require hard work.
Charity
The contribution of Bill Gates in technology has helped in transforming the world. The
respect and admiration of Bill Gates originate from his philanthropic nature. He participates in

various donations or charity programs to create a difference in the world. Therefore, one should
learn to establish a change within one’s locality or globally.

This paper explores the practical leadership styles of Bill Gates in the Microsoft
Company. Bill Gates has motivating and charismatic features. His visionary and tactical
leadership style assisted in the achievement of the Company. Besides, he has significant effects
on the whole world. Though Bill Gates has transformational and charismatic leadership traits, he
lacked proper employee relation. He improved the computing company. Bill Gates has different
leadership features like skillfulness, high integrity, sociable, competitiveness, determination, and
intelligence. He uses delegation, autocratic, transformational, and task-oriented leadership style
in managing the company.
