Effects of Technology on Today’s Society

In modern society, human life and technology have become one and the same thing.

The two cannot be separated. Today’s society has established a cyclical co-dependence on

technology. Ideally, technology is evolving every other day at a rapid speed. This is the same

speed in which it impacts on modern society. Notably, technology affects the economy,

culture and the living standards of society. Due to the effects that technology has on the

community, there has been a debate on whether technology is beneficial to society or not.

Either way, technology has affected modern society both positively and negatively. This

paper, therefore, will explore the way technology has affected today’s society capturing both

the positive and negative impacts in details.

Notably, technology has impacted on modern society in many ways. For example,

technology has led to effective communication in today’s society. Cars have been universal in

contemporary society to the extent that some people cannot imagine life without them. The

use of vehicles has changed the human environment for the better. Before the advent of

technology, transport was not smooth. It would take people months to travel to other

continents, something which can be done today in hours using air transport (Weaver et al.

10). Besides, it is easy to move around with cars when a person wants to visit families in

different geographical places or even when going to work. This has streamlined the entire

area of transport. Arguably, technology has made life easier for today’s society than it was

before.

Moreover, technology has changed the way people communicate. It has positively

improved the methods and speed of communication. Prior to this new technology, an

individual would use a letter as a mean of communication which took days or even weeks.

However, with the advent of technology, communication has been made easier. Today a

person can use their phone to send a message, send a letter through an email, or call another

person. It is easy to communicate with the world today than it was before. With mobile

phones especially smartphones, laptops, and notepads, an individual can communicate to the

world and get information about what is happening not only in their country but across the

globe (Misra, Shalini, et al. 290). Radios and televisions have also positively affected

modern day society. For example, today people can hear and see news of what is happening

in their nations and other parts of the world as well. This is a clear indication that technology

has benefited today’s society in a good way.

Another way in which technology has positively affected today’s society is through

enhancing education and learning processes. For instance, there are many learning

institutions across the world which are using technology in their teaching processes. For

example, there are smart whiteboards, computers, projectors, iPads, and mobile phones as

well as the internet. All these have revolutionized learning in schools as well as improved the

learning experience for students. For example, students can use their laptops or mobile

phones to search for information from the internet when they have assignments or projects.

This has made it easier to access an assortment of information (Misra, Shalini, et al. 278). In

addition, instructors can send assignments to students through school websites or emails

which makes it convenient. There is also the concept of online learning which has been made

possible by technology in current society. This has enabled students to study while in

different geographical locations. It is a clear indication of how important technology is to

today’s society.

Additionally, technology has led to longer lives among people in modern society. This

can be attributed to the medical advancements which have been witnessed in the recent past.

Unlike before when it was difficult to treat some maladies, advancements in medical

technology has made it possible to come up with medications for different forms of diseases.

With this, society can get preventive drugs and treatment for illnesses which has increased

the lifespan of individuals. Also, research helps researchers to identify the best ways to live a

healthy lifestyle which is then communicated to the society hence improving their well-being.

While technology has positively affected today’s society as seen in the above

discussion, it also has some negative effects. For example, technology has led to isolation. In

reality, people today are not maintaining family contacts as they used before. With the use of

mobile phones on the rise, people find it easy to contact their families and friends through the

use of mobile phones. For instance, the use of social sites helps people remain in contact with

their loved ones. Apparently, many people have isolated themselves from their friends and

families by cutting the one on one connection (Crowley & Heyer 15). Another adverse effect

of technology on today’s society is pollution. There are many plants which manufacture

electronics. These firms emit harmful fumes into the air which people breathe. The result of

this increased health conditions. Additionally, technology such as use social sites and

surveillance cameras have led to a lack of privacy for many people across the world today.

In conclusion, technology has impacted today’s society more positive than negative as

seen in the above discussion. For example, the advancement in medication, education,

improved communication and transport, and improved life expectancy. However, it leads to

pollution, takes away privacy and has led to isolation within society.
