Epidemic of Human Trafficking
Introduction
Simply put, human trafficking is a term that describes the act where human beings are
transported and enslaved after a being sold, and later forced to engage in certain activities against
their will (Shelley, 2010).
While the “business” has recently raised eyebrows, it isn’t something that started
yesterday or 50-years back; rather it began more than three centuries back. Many would have
thought that with the enactment of the U.S’s Thirteenth Amendment, this illegal act would come
to an end. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Meanwhile, several explanations explain the continued
existence of this “business.”
Causes of slave trade
Profitability
One of the reason is its profitability. Slave trade is ranked as the third most profitable
illegal and unethical business after the smuggling of weapons and drugs (Shelley, 2010). This is
necessitated by the abundance of African immigrants who cross to Europe in search of jobs due
to poverty and physical abuse. In 2017 alone 116,000 Africans crossed red sea to Italy (Grandi,
2017).
Technology and the web

An increased rate of reliance on the web has enlarged the scope of human trafficking. For
example, children are friend requested on the social media by their perpetrators, who pretend to
be potential lovers. In the end, they convince them to meet in some places, where they kidnap
and sell them to prostitution.
Language
The language used to describe the victim of sex trafficking has often criticized the
victims and profiled offenders as innocent. For example, the terms like "whoreor “prostitute”
have frequently been used to give a false notion that victims opted to be exploited. Traffickers,
on the other hand, have taken advantage of this blame game to gain from this awful activity.
Real life example
After losing his father, Queen recalls being oppressed by her uncle. She decided to
relocate from Nigeria in 2014 after she was given false promises of finding a good job in Niger
(Queen 2016). While in her new destination, Queen recalls being approached by a Libyan man
who promised to pay her around six times what she used to earn in Nigeria. Little did Queen
know that she was turning herself into the world of prostitution. She says, she would be raped by
several men in a Libyan hotel room. The ordeal continued for years until a Nigerian man rescued
her and taken to a refugee camp in Italy.
Conclusion
Children and the likes of Queen are not prostitutes; rather they are just sexually exploited.
Therefore, challenging how we profile exploiters and victims will assist change how the society

approach to sex trafficking business and eventually eradicate it. Additionally, empowering the
African and other developing countries will help in reducing this act of slave trade, significantly.
