Equal Pay for Equal Work, Equal Pay Act, Paycheck Fairness Act
The issue of equal pay for equal work has been portrayed in different media. The internet
is one of them. In the web, https://www.aclu.org is one website that discusses in details this issue.
Historically, women have earned less than men for the same work, with the pay gap getting even
wider for the people of color. In 2013, women working full time earned an average of 78% of what
their male counterparts earned for the same job. African-Americans earned 64% and Latinas
56%of what was earned by a white male.
The Paycheck fairness act will serve to ensure that all Americans get equal pay for equal
work. This bill is aimed at updating the 1963 Equal Pay Act, which has not achieved the promise
of closing the wage gap because of limited tools for enforcement and inadequate remedies. This
new act would make important changes to the law which would include:
Make it mandatory for employers to show that wage differences are based on other factors and
not sex
Banning retaliation against any worker who inquires about the wage practices of their employer
or reveal their wages
Allowing valid comparisons among employees to determine wages.
Coming up with strict penalties against those who violate the equal pay act.
Requiring the Department of Labor to help workers and collect data related to wages.
