ETHICAL DILEMMA 2
Abstract
This paper discusses an ethical dilemma. The article explains how to deal with a scenario
where one is faced with two option. One of the alternatives is to remove shoes while entering a
dirty house as a visitor. Another option is to decline the notice and enter the house with shoes. This
paper will explain what an ethical dilemma is. It will further offer one of the options to the moral
paradox given as example two in the self-reflection assignment 2. The rationale of the option taken
will also be discussed, and finally, there will be an evaluation how the option taken contradicts or
abides with the chooser moral ethics. (Keywords ethical dilemma).
Ethical Dilemma
An ethical dilemma is a situation where one is faced with more than one option to choose
from, and either of the choices taken will compromise his or her moral/professional ethics and
values. It is also called a moral paradox. Any ethical dilemma situation must contain three
elements. One of the factors is that the position must command decision making. Another aspect
is that there must be more than one choice to choose from. The last element is that no matter what
course of action is taken, some of the professional or moral ethics will be compromised.
The situation in example two is a perfect circumstance of an ethical dilemma. There is an
option of asking whether you should remove the shoes or not. There is also an option of ignoring
the statement at the door.
My Response to the Ethical Dilemma
I will not ask the family whether I am supposed to remove my shoes. I will enter the house
in shoes. If there were a sign at the entrance that reminds a person to ask whether he or she is

supposed to remove shoes, I would ignore such sign. When I enter the house, I will handle the
situation of sitting on the dirty place by placing my handkerchief on the sitting surface.
The Basis of My Choice
I will not ask whether to remove my shoes because I will be risking to be told to remove
the shoes. The primary reason why I will be reluctant to remove the shoe is that the house is not
clean. The black feet of the kid shows how the place is incredibly filthy.
Health is a critical factor that every human being will put fist beyond the morals. I will not
remove my shoes to protect my feet from contraction of dangerous germs. The dirt in the house is
capable of containing bacteria which may cause foot diseases when stepped on in a barefoot. The
fear of jigger infection is also another good reason that will deter me from removing my shoes.
On the issue of sitting on a dirty surface, I will prefer sitting on my handkerchief spread on
the dusty surface than refusing to seat. The handkerchief will prevent my clothes from getting
dirty. I will avoid standing because my morals dictate me that when I am welcomed into a house,
it is respectful to take a seat.
Contradictions between My Choice and My Moral Values.
All along it is always my habit to ask whether to remove my shoes or not when I enter any
house. In fact, I still find it easy and ethically acceptable to remove my shoe while entering a house
unless I am asked not to do so.
The option of entering the house with my shoe is a hard choice because it contradicts my
moral belief of the first impression. My ethical reasoning tells me that the things you do in the first
instance matters a lot in defining your character to a stranger. In the above situation, I am visiting

the family in my first time, but I am compromising my belief through entering the house without
removing my shoe.
My choice is also contradicting what I have been hating about entering a house with shoes.
Medically and morally, I always know that entering a house in shoes can bring bacteria in the
house hence exposing the house owners into a health risk. Despite my informed belief, I have
contradicted it by choosing not to remove the shoes.
I always find it morally ethical and health-wise beneficial to remove shoes when I am not
in motion especially when seated in the house. It is always my value because I believe that it makes
me comfortable and enables blood circulation freely within my feet. The choice of entering the
house with shoes contradicts my belief of deluded comfort.
The last contradiction of my choice with my values is respect. I always believe that it is
respectable to remove your shoes while entering someone’s house mainly because you don’t want
to make the floor or the carpet dirty. It also a sign of respect for the cleanliness maintained by the
host. However, the choice of not removing my shoes seems to contradict my usual moral ethic.
In conclusion, it is true to argue that ethical dilemma forces the decision maker to make
some choices that eventually compromises his or her moral values.
