Introduction
The primary goal of a business is to maximize profit which is achieved by acquiring a large
market share of the targeted consumers. Therefore it is important to implement business ethics
and corporate social responsibility in production to ensure that there is a continuous development
of the company. Business ethics is where the organization is expected to follow the set rules and
regulation in the society to ensure that there are right processes in production (McMurrian &
Matulich 2016). Corporate social responsibility requires the company to engage in activities that
are a benefit to the society. Pacific Gas and Electric Company engage in business ethics and
corporate social responsibility for an increase in competitive advantage in the energy market.
Decision by Pacific Gas and Electric Company
The company has come up with a decision engage the stakeholders in a decision making to
increase quality products and services to the targeted consumers. According to PG&E
Corporation (2017), the company has engaged the community and consumers to ensure that there
is an increase in the quality of products and services making it possible to effectively serve the
consumers. The company aims at achieving the expectations of the communities, customers,
employees, investors and suppliers of PG&E Corporation. This decision of engaging the
stakeholders in providing natural gas and electric services aims at ensuring that there is the
implementation of effective strategies to meet the diverse expectations of the consumers. The gas
and electric services provided to the PG&E Corporation has greatly improved due to the high
engagement with the consumers. There are affordable, reliable and affordable electric services.
The leaders in different teams are required to meet various issues of the community through
empowerment of teams to effectively serve the society.

Potential ethical implication of the decision
The decision is ethical as it aims at increasing the operations of the company by effectively
handling the issues of the stakeholders. The decision is morally acceptable to the targeted
consumers as the management ensures that the right functions during production of gas and
electric services. The company aims at increasing the honesty with the employees through
empowerment of teams which are aims at increasing the number of potential consumers of the
company through quality production. In dealing with the stakeholders of the PG&E Corporation
the management has ensured that there is transparency of operations to make the company highly
accepted in the market. The functions of the company aim at ensuring that there is an
improvement of environment conservation through development of sustainable products that are
eco friendly (PG&E Corporation 2017). The operation of the company aims at providing clean
gas, reliable electric services and renewable energy which will effectively meet the needs of the
consumers. Compliance with legal and social regulations makes the operations of the company to
be ethical thus creating a sustainable competitive advantage.
Effects on decision making process
It is vital to consider ethics in decision making processes to ensure that the plans and policies
implemented by the company meet the expectation of the stakeholders. According to Hill, Jones
and Schilling (2014) corporate ethics will have an impact on PG&E Corporation decision
making process in ensuring that the strategies implemented meet the long term goals of the
company. In this case the company had to consider the various issues of the stakeholders to
ensure that the needs of all stakeholders are meet by the implementation of strategies of the
company. Communities and consumer engagement by PG&E Corporation makes it possible for

the company to achieve set profitability goals as the company services and products are highly
accepted by the targeted consumers.
Corporate social responsibility of Pacific Gas and Electric Company
Corporate social responsibility requires a company to implement programs and policies that
will increase the social status of the company. This is where the company is required to
implement strategies that will increase the standards of the community through the product and
service production. The corporate social responsibility policy of a company makes it possible to
evaluate the accountability of the company to the community and the environment. According to
PG&E Corporation (2017) the company has engaged in the following corporate social
responsibility in 2016; keeping the electric and gas bills affordable, providing customer
satisfaction, save $258 million for the consumers, reduction of carbon dioxide emission by
nearly 1.4 million metric tons, interconnection 300,000 solar consumers and provided $28
million to charitable organization for community sustainability. These social corporate practices
increased the sale of the gas and electric services to the targeted consumers. CSR has a positive
impact on PG&E Corporation due to increase of value, acquisition of new consumer, retention of
consumers and improves the reputation of the company in the targeted market (Cheng, Ioannou
& Serafeim 2014). It is essential to implement critical thinking in CSR by effectively analyzing
the needs of the consumers to develop policies that will be widely accepted by the diverse
stakeholders of the company.
Conclusion
From the discussion, it is clear that corporate ethics and corporate social responsibility is
essential for a company to achieve set goals of production. This requires the company to

perform what is right according to the society while CSR requires the company to implement
policies that meet the expectations of the community. PG&E Corporation implements ethics and
CSR in coming up with their strategies so as to achieve long term goals of the company of a
sustainable competitive edge in the gas and electric service industry.
