The Hollywood film industry is celebrated for the numerous thrillers, epics, and
splatter films collections that showcase brutality, love, betrayal, fear, and people's
anxieties about the happenings in the world. The Battle of Troy and the Blood Diamond
film industries present us with the inhumane acts that human beings can be involved in
when pushed to the edge.
In a bid to address government and political issues, these films expose the
brutality of war, civil wars, technological advancement and recently, the acceptance of
the use of force to achieve certain personal goals. The Hollywood film industry provides
the audiences with the opportunity to see their fears come to be fulfilled when the worst
moments happen.
Blood Diamond is a movie based on the brutal killings in Sierra Leone. It got its
name from the mine areas of war that was used to support insurgencies. This followed the
1991 to 2002 attacks by the Revolutionary United Front with the initial intent to fight for
the poor in Sierra Leone (Abu 2003). A different dimension was, however, encountered
when the group lost its founding purpose. Instead, it ravaged the villages in Sierra Leone,
causing deaths of many innocent civilians that resulted in a significant number of
refugees. Based on the conflict, a lot of destructions occurred, especially on the
infrastructure. Abu (2003) pointed out that the war significantly violated various human
rights and dignity as women and girls were raped, young men and children shot.
Those who were captured were brutally murdered as some had their limbs
mutilated. Others were taken as slaves to work in the diamond mines. Diamond was an

important mineral for the Revolutionary United Front. This was because it was a source
of income, being traded for weapons and ammunitions. The bulk of the mineral was taken
illegally through smuggling out of Sierra Leone through Liberia, where Charles Taylor,
the warlord and later the president gave support to the rebels (Greg 2004).
The Blood Diamond Movie significantly exposes the greed in the society. This is
seen as Archer is willing to help Solomon find his family for the sake of the hidden
diamond. Also, it clearly portrays the strong family culture brought out by Solomon's
willingness and frantic search for his family despite the odds. Furthermore, it greatly
highlights the plight of the civilians during cases of unlawfulness.
All the films, Baby, the Blood Diamond, and the Trojan War, share a lot of
similarities. They involve brutal killing, rape and property destruction. Also, the primary
cause of conflicts is due to greed and personal interests. The Trojan War was due to Paris'
lust as well as Agamemnon's desire to conquer Trojan so as to expand his territory and
control trade (Bryce 2005). In Blood Diamond, the war is fuelled by the greed of a few
individuals such to control the diamond wealth.
Furthermore, all the three movies are set on strong political influences. In Trojan,
Agamemnon has a large army but still wish to extend his political superiority. On the
other hand, Blood Diamond is set on a politically unstable country of Sierra Leone giving
room for civil war. It is clear from the three movies that the most marginalized people
such as women and children are the ones who suffer. Also, they depict the impacts of war
as many people in Sierra Leon escape as refugees. The same is seen in Trojan where the
few surviving Trojans had to flee for safety.
EXHIBITION 4
The greatest difference is their cultural setup and functions. Trojan is set up in the
pre-colonial Greek based on Greek's traditions. It is a culture where the success of any
individual is based on his wealth and army. It indicates that conflicts could be solved
through peaceful negations failure to which people resort to physical combat. Blood
Diamond, however, is set on the post-colonial culture. There is the use of guns with no
peaceful negotiations; instead, the offenders are arrested and jailed.
The Blood Diamond movie portrays the value of women in the society. This is
because it was the American woman journalist Braddy who brought the evil deeds to
light. In Trojan, however, women are portrayed as properties that can lead to war. Baby is
set on the Indian cultural background, with the omission of music which is an important
Hindu tradition.
The transportations of diamond from Sierra Leon through Liberia and finally to
the United States indicates the high level of globalization. Both films are transnational as
the War of Trojan cuts across different kingdoms; from Greek to Trojan. The same
applies for the Blood Diamond, with the trade taking place between the various nations
such as Liberia and United States. There is high censorship in both films due to certain
brutal and sexual scenes to comply with the government film censorship policy. The
shooting of Baby across various nations and towns such as Abu Dhabi indicates the
globalization in the movie industry.
All the three films have clearly brought out the theme of film power on social
change. The Blood Diamond film brought to light the evil of diamonds as a mineral to
people' lives. This is confirmed by the Kimberley Conference in South Africa to address
the issue of illegal trade on the diamond. In Trojan, Paris learns the importance of respect
EXHIBITION 5
though late. The death of Achilles is a lesson for people to be respectful and humbled.
Had he humbled himself and listened to his mother, he would have not died. The death of
Agamemnon clearly shows that through greed, people perish.
The film BABY begins with the destruction of twelve crackdown team of secret
agents, with only four of them remaining. The BABY, a counterterrorism mission meant
to last four to five years is coming to an end. Rasheed Naz is planning a deadly terror
attack in India. Ajay, however, spoils the plot, stopping the planned attack (The Times of
India 2015).
Contextual Reviews
Trojan: The Battle of Troy (2004)
Trojan, the Battle of Troy is a First Cinema world hit that was released in 2004 as
the world and highly watched, and Award nominated epic movie with a rating of 7.2/10.
This is a collection of films that mostly register a collective tales of love, betrayal,
heroism, and passion. It is a war that has been passed from generations to generations
since the beginning of civilization. Based in ancient Greek, the film greatly follows the
Greek tradition and culture.
The Troy movie, based on the Homer's epic poem called The Iliad, records the
legendary Trojan War. It follows the attack on the fortress city wall by the army of Greek
under the leadership of Menelaus from Sparta and Agamemnon the king of Mycenae
(Carabatea 2007: Rutter 2007). The cause of the war is as a result of the last of Paris
(Orlando Bloom), the Trojan Prince. Paris seduced Helen (Diane Kruger), the queen of

the city-state of Sparta. This was during their visit to Sparta for a peace talk to settle the
long strife between Sparta and Trojan (Cline 2012).
Paris' action greatly angers both his brother Hector (Eric Bana) and Menelaus
(Brendan Gleeson) Helen's husband. Hector pointed out that it was wrong for Paris to go
on a peace mission and leave with the king's wife. The seduction of Helen causes the king
to seek his brother's support, leading to a great Greek army setting sail to go and attack
the unpenetrable Trojan city wall.

out and face Hector, his cousin's killer. Hector bravely comes out to face the unbeaten Achilles;
however, he is effortlessly killed.
After twists and turns, the movie comes to an end after the death of Achilles. The
epitome of the scene is the death of the Agamemnon, who is stabbed in the neck by the female
servant, Achilles' lover. He shoots Achilles severally in the chest but kills him on the spot with a
single first shot on his ankle (Carabatea 2007). The surviving Trojans escape while the city of
Trojan is set ablaze. Achilles is given a proper send-off, and the Greek armies conquer and
occupy Trojan city, making the end of Troy city.

The film begins with an invasion by the Revolutionary United Front militia. The
attack is carried out majorly by the rebel children who fired at the escaping villagers at
Solomon's community. The fighting rebels were children soldiers kidnaped from their
families and trained to kill mercilessly (David 2005). Solomon was unfortunate and got
caught during the raid. He is captured and like others, taken as a slave to work in the
Revolutionary United Front diamond mines.
A few years later, his son also gets arrested upon completion of his elementary
studies. Solomon sees his son being taught together with children his age to fight. The
teaching majorly involved how to forget their families, fire different kinds of weapons
and to ruthlessly kill and destroy property. Abu (2003) states that they are taught the
fundamentals of Revolutionary United Front and are required to pledge loyalty to
Revolutionary United Front and its leadership.
Solomon luckily discovers a valuable and largely remarkable pink diamond. For
safety, he buries it so that no one finds it. Shortly, the Sierra Leone Army launches a
violent airstrike aimed to wipe out the rebels. Fortunately, Solomon and a few others
survive. However, they are arrested and taken to jail in the capital of Sierra Leone where
they are detained as rebels despite being used as slaves by the Revolutionary United
Front rebels.
Coincidentally, Danny Archer also gets arrested due to a foul diamond transaction
deal. He is taken to the same jail and learns of Solomon's hidden fortune. Due to greed,

Archer begins to arrange the release of Solomon with the hope of getting the hidden
Diamond as a reward for helping him find his family. Archer then searches for Maddy
Bowen, an American journalist interested in doing a story concerning the blood diamonds
(Greg 2004). Archer gives Maddy his word that he would give her all the information
regarding the world's largest diamond corporation. All she needed was to help Solomon
find his family.
Maddy is lucky enough to get her long search for the story, as both Solomon and
Maddy take their journey to South Africa to attend a Kimberley Conference. At the
Conference, they meet other representatives from large diamond producing and trading
countries. The meeting is aimed at finding solutions to the blood diamond and Solomon
gets an opportunity to testify as an eyewitness (Alison 2008).

The film begins with a conversation between a senior minister and Ali. He states
that the Government must win the confidence of the Indian Muslim communities because
Pakistan seemed to be exploiting the community's belief of being alienated. Interestingly,
the undercover agent (Ali Khan) does the unthinkable. He gets up from his seat, closes
the door and confidently comes back to slap an imperative official as his boss watches.
This reveals the daring acts of an agent who is a protagonist playing with dangerous
situations.
The brave act ascertains the fact that the patriotism of the violent heroes ought not
to be considered serious. This is in line with the belief of the film in regards to violence,
heroism, and patriotism. According to The Times of India (2015), the film is in line with
a fictional team of secret agents, a temporary counterterrorism team called Baby
constituted following the Mumbai attacks in 2008. It handles searching and eliminating
terror groups, and is headed by Danny Denzongpa (Feroz Khan).
Ajay Singh Rajput (Akshay Kumar) informs Taufeeq (Mujib Khan) who is an ISI
agent of his defense for a family of the Muslim community. This was during the riots in
Gujarat. He further states that he has classified Indian Religion, putting it in all the forms
filed. This sets the stage for the film, indicating that terror groups do not have a religion
and no particular community should be allied with terror activities.
The screenplay is that of BABY, the hero. It flows systematically, taking the
viewer on a journey of thrilling moments and surprises. Simple humor that keeps one
entertained all through is used to enhance conversations. The life of Ajay involves
EXHIBITION 11
operations without letting his wife know his job. Ajay's wife (Madhurima Tuli) does not
know her husband's job details.
Ajay tries to rescue a fellow Indian secret agent in Turkey, and in the process
arrests his junior traitor who had worked under him but later turned against them. He
informs Ajay of a planned bomb attack in Delhi that would cause destruction in a mall in
New Delhi which together with his team are able can prevent. Their investigations reveal
that this was among a series of such planned attacks.
Maulana (Rashed Naz), the mastermind of the terror group, is causing lots of
threats along the India and Pakistan border. With lots of skills, he manages to plan and
carry out an escape for Bilal (Kay Kay Menon). Immediately, a team of secret agents is
dispatched and manages to get Taufiq, an ISI agent pretending to be the local leader.
Through torture, Ajay obtains information regarding their contacts locally (The Times of
India 2015). To achieve their objective, the secret agent team goes undercover.
Unfortunately, a bomb explosion occurs, killing all of the mission team except Ajay.
In conclusion, BABY is one of the finest Bollywood films ever featured in Indian
movie history. This is not only because of the perfectly balanced creativity and thought
but also the best credentials of the cinema.
