Existentialism Is a Humanism.
Existentialism is a theory of philosophy that puts more emphasizes on the individual person
existence as being responsible as well as free agents while establishing self-developments through
acts of will. It looks at various aspects of a human individual such as acting, thinking, and feelings
of an individual. Jean-Paul Sartre an existentialist French philosopher through his work, He tries
to have an audience of his fellow philosophers and other people that he is not pessimistic,
subjectivist or even relativist through his presentation of describing and portraying human being
as isolated individuals in their existence. In his work, he focuses on the significant components of
existentialism in attempts to have a clear response to criticism by Christians and Marxists. We
seek to understand the main features of Sartre's worldview and develop a critique of his position
in the existentialist context
Jean-Paul Sartre presents several terms in his work that he believes through understanding
their definitions will help people as well as other philosophers who criticized his observations and
views on existentialism, to change their opinion and agree with him
1
. The terms that he emphasizes
on are; subjectivity, abandonment, anguish, and despair. After one of his presentation, he involves
two members of his audience (interlocutor and one the artist and leftist Pierre Neville). Neville
perceived Sartre reasoning and argument as a misguided notion that degraded human nature. Sartre
and accepted a request to lecture on the existentialism theory and he had believed it was a great
opportunity to offer his critiques great enlightenment on the matter as he defended his philosophy.

Sartre, Jean-Paul. Existentialism is a Humanism. Yale University Press, 2007.
He addressed a full packed a hall that did include not only philosophers only but also the
general public. He noticed that the matter had drawn the interest of people across divides and was
no longer an issue of academic but any man party. He noted that the days of only philosophers
attacking other philosophers was long gone and that the at the time philosophy is shot down on the
public square.
Existentialism is seen as an avenue that invites individuals to accept and continue existing
in quietism and desperation as there exist no remedies to some problems facing them. It allows
consideration of various man’s actions as not possible

. Believing in such an idea, man would find
himself in contemplation philosophy which would lead to some laxity and therefore becoming
victims of bourgeois philosophy. At many times individuals have been with continued degrading
man through bad aspects and forgetting to appreciate the bright, beautiful, gracious, and attractive
side of human nature. Anytime that a man realizes himself as an isolated being, they end up being
unable to gain back the state of solidarity with men who are not themselves. It is not possible to
arrive at this stage in the Cognito.
Critique.
Sartre philosophy of existentialism has got some flaws and can only be claimed to be
wrong. From the philosophy, there exist the idea of “existence precedes essence”.
2
There exist
several reasons as to why find this reasoning as flawed and misguided. Firstly, “existence precedes
essence” needs further clarifications and better explanations. Human being is aware of their

existence and their surroundings, and the essence is achieved through genetic composition as well
as environmental makeup.
Traditionally especially on the western philosophers’ environments essence comes before
existence. It is only our genetic makeups and our environments that can contribute to human
behaviors. Inheritable genetic compositions and the traits acquired across different existing species
are commonly referred to as human nature (Studebaker 2012). The theory of the existentialism
rules out the possibility of the common human nature and also the possibility of existence coming
before essence. By claiming this, it reasons out that our consciousness can be able to determine
how to experience our environment and it does not rely on our genetic makeups or environmental
traits.
Another major problem that surrounds Existentialism is that consciousness, the aspect that
determines how well man responds to facticity, itself is not composed of facticity-of genetic
composition as well as surrounding background and structuring then it lacks meaning.
Existentialism suggests and make claims that existence comes first and then the biggest question
that we have to ask ourselves is how can then consciousness could be available, and we know that
it originates from a source that has got fundamental facticity. We are also aware that that
scientifically, consciousness is as a result of the physical implementation of the brain. The ability
of someone’s consciousness will diminish with the level of brain damage. We can, therefore, try
to imagine how an individual with a damaged brain if attacked by some situations, then how would
such a person react to the facticity in explanation. The response expected would be different as
part of brain memory tasked with the responsibility of handling critical thinking would have been
damaged. This is a prove that existence will never and has never come before essence in order to
acquire consciousness.
In conclusion, critical thinking is an essential aspect of making informed decisions about
philosophical reasoning. Also, the aspect existentialism is crucial as it helps man understand
himself and his surrounding better through interrogations of the theory and criticism it attracts.
