Societal expectations
Expectations are there, and they will always continue to be there. That is because it helps
make the world a whole society. There are various ways in which those expectations can build
someone’s life or destroy it forever. However, in most cases, the expectations are usually
positive and for the betterment of somebody. They typically come from every corner, yourself,
the family members, and people around you, teachers, the community and at times even the
entire world. If the rules of expectations are followed, then there are various ways in which
those expectations will influence your life. Just like in the book, Wes Moore’s life was
significantly shaped by the hopes that people had on him. Other than that, I am also a victim of
being influenced by people’s expectation. The article will undoubtedly outline how that happens.
Initially, I never used to participate well in my studies because I never thought there was
anybody who was expecting anything out of my education. I used to do my work with a lot of
mediocrity because, in the long run, it was my life. However, that changed when one day one of
the teachers talked to me. I was able to get motivated by studies after he had expressed to me. He
said he wanted to be performing in a certain way and that he had very high hopes for me. That
made me gets very committed to my studies. Today, I always try my best in all the subjects to
ensure I succeed and do not disappoint him. That helped me changed the way I perceive
education.

Change in behavior is another way expectations shapes peoples life. Expectations help in
developing reality, and thus it means a change in various practices. Sometimes people never see
their values and purpose in life. According to them, they feel that they are a curse to this world.
As a result, they usually end up being people with some very low esteem. They tend to settle on
their comfort zone because at the long run they are nothing good that can come out of them. As a
result, they tend not to reach their full potential. However, when people put some expectations on
you, things will change just like Wes Moore. Upon noticing that there are a lot of people who are
looking after him, he turned his behavior. He had never seen any worth of living because his
father died when he was very young ending up being brought up by a single mother. His change
in behavior was as a result of expectations, and that made him end up being successful (Moore,
34).
People expectation can also influence your health. People tend never to know the value of
having good health. They never take care of their bodies because of a wrong attitude. As a result,
they usually end up making low nutritious foods and abusing drugs that in the long run ruin their
health. However, when people have expectations in you things definitely will change. There will
be that guilt of desiring not to fail all those people who are looking after you, therefore, in order
not to abandon them, you will start taking care of your health so that you can reach and attain our
goals. Wee Moore ends up quitting drugs to take care of his health.
