Faith Integration Paper: Nutrition for the Elder Persons

Nutrition can be defined as the process of obtaining or the provision of necessary food for
health and growth. Nutrition for older persons needs to be observed carefully since they are
vulnerable to diseases associated with poor nutrition. The individuals referred to as older people
are those with 60 or more years (Solomons & Bermudez, 2017). This proportion is rising
virtually in all countries in the world. Generally, older persons have high probability to
malnutrition. There are many practical problems that are encountered during the attempts to
observe the diet for the elderly. Firstly, there is no clear definition for their nutritional
requirements. The rate of metabolism of the old people is low. This is because the rate of
metabolism decreases as one continues to live.
The ageing process affects other nutrient needs for elderly. This is because while
requirement of some nutrients reduces on the other hand it may give rise to other essential
requirements later in life. It therefore implies that there is need to review the daily recommended
nutrient allowances which are in implementation currently to cater for the elderly. Governments
should try their level best to initiate programs so as to ensure that the nutritional requirements of
the elderly have been met (Solomons & Bermudez, 2017).
Many diseases associated with the elderly can be attributed to dietary factors, where they
may have been suffering from some since infancy. These factors compounded with the natural
changes associated with ageing process generally pose a danger on the lives of the elderly. Fat in
the diet is associated with the cancer of some body parts like; prostate, colon and also pancreas.
There are other dietary factors significantly affects atherogenic risk factors like; blood lipids and
hypertension pose a risk to development of coronary heart disease.
The most common diseases associated with the older persons like; diabetes, osteoporosis,
cardiovascular and cerebrovascular which are referred to as degenerative, are all diet affected.
Micronutrients have drawn great attention on their role in preventing non communicable
diseases. In most cases, there is micronutrient deficiency in the diet of the elderly people due to a
couple of factors, for example, taking foods in a poor way. The price at which foods are sold
with micronutrients is also another factor, which affects their consumption. Older people often
have decreased immunity; compounding it with the above aspect it therefore triggers this group’s
quick aging and even death.
Diet changes are factors which pose a risk on the life of a person but it has more impact
on the older people. Deteriorating vision and cases of low memory contribute to poor dietary
habits and poor health. Diet modifications in young people should only be made if drug therapy
has been considered in serious attempts. Consuming vegetables as well as fruits once or twice in
servings daily reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%. Ethical issues in nutritional
matters which encompass historical, cultural and religious influences are also observed. There is
a group of people tied to their beliefs culturally therefore this affects their nutritional intakes
since they match their nutrition with their beliefs hence, this has an impact to their health. For
instance, many religions have guidelines that dictate their diet, for example, excluding some
foods like a given type of flesh from certain animals. It is important to recognize such beliefs but
consequently, ensure that the interests of the elderly have been put into consideration. Diet
should be observed especially for the cases of the elderly despite the ethics.
Ageing and nutrition currently is a global challenge. In 2002 the estimated number of
order people in the world was 605 million people, where nearly 400 million were living in poor
countries. The number of older people in nations is expected to rise as the time progresses.
Women comprise the largest population of older population in nations since their life span is
longer than that of men. The rise of the number of older people worldwide involves nutritional
needs, emphasis and patterns of malnutrition.
Health professionals, including nurses and nutritionalists encounter issues associated with
nutrition daily. The bigger proportion of cases reported frequently is among the elderly. Reduced
involvement of nurses in elderly nutritional care is a situation contributing to malnutrition. Lack
of nutritional knowledge contributes greatly to insufficient nutritional practice. Healthcare
professionals which include the nurses have skills which are of much value in the nutritional
sector hence they need to exercise competence in taking measures to care for the elderly.
Adequate nutritional care and recognition of malnutrition is significant in general clinical care
where nurses majorly occupy the centre stage. Nurses should provide holistic nutritional care
guidelines to those who care for the elderly and also offer nutritional care to those in health
centers. Generally, nurses are in the best position to provide good nutritional care to all (Nurses
& Council, 2017).
A nurse has the responsibility to check how the elderly take their food, educating those
who take care of the elderly and also making a follow-up on the effectiveness of nutritional
measures recommended especially when caring for the elderly. Studies indicate that in nursing
schools and other medical training centers, the issue of nutrition is underrated hence given a little
attention. This makes it not to be covered extensively. Therefore, nurses have little knowledge in
executing or solving cases involving diets. The issue of nutrition for the older people was
therefore highlighted as great which required national attention. The general implication is that a
lot needs to be done to educate people on the proper dietary practices. A Christian nurse who
dedicates himself or herself to giving the necessary guidelines to the elderly and also gives them
the best nutritional care receives blessings from God (Ulrich, et al., 2017).
