Title: Fatherhood
Introduction
Fatherhood refers to the state of being a father. Fatherhood requires one to have or gain
the appropriate qualities of a father. In this case, fatherhood refers to the kinship kind of a
relationship that is between the father and the offspring or the children(Cosby, 2018, 96).
Fatherhood is well portrayed in the Prospero, Troy and in Hal's unnamed father. The kind of
fathers portrayed in the three plays are quite difficult to understand and deal with. The three
stories give an outline of the examples of good and bad fathers. In this case, the father portrayed
in the Prospero is termed as a strict father and has a very stern attachment to the offspring by the
name Miranda. In addition to that, the father seems to be very overprotective on issues pertaining
sex. Prospero is portrayed as a bad father as he is the kind that loves acquiring control over
everyone in the family(Prospero, 2017, 26-59). He loves being associated with power and
supremacy. On the other hand, Troy describes the Troy as a father has the notion that his
responsibility is to ensure that his son is brought up with the highest levels of discipline. In each
case, being strict and brutal is the only way he found appropriate to bring up his son. On the
other hand, in Hal's unnamed father, Troy, tends to be an eccentric father. In this case, father is

not very conventional and strict. However, he is the kind of the father who will ensure that the
family runs smoothly and that no one is violated. Fatherhood is a key crucial aspect in a family
and each and each father should display the very best qualities to ensure that the offspring’s, as
well as the rest of the family, live in peace and harmony. Fathers are key pillars in a family and
therefore the way they portray their characters in a family set up usually has dire consequences.
Troy, Hal's unnamed father, and Prospero bring out the best and the worst characters in
fathers(Cosby, 2018, 96).
Discussion
Fatherhood in the play Prospero is displayed as strict and one that loves having a total
control over the children. This kind of fatherhood is displayed as truly a healthy. In this case, the
fathers are supposed to allow their children to have some freedom and right to bring out their
opinion but Prospero sees none of that in his offspring. In this case, Prospero is brought out I the
play as a father who loves to have a total control over the rest of the family members. In this
case, Miranda being one of his offspring, he has to ensure that he has a total control over the
child. Just like in any other relationship between children and parents, Miranda and Prospero
usually have arguments about the behavior of the father to the children but this does not change
the character of Prospero (Master, 1987, 505-513) . In this case, Shakespeare writes the play
during a time that women had no right or freedom to decide on anything in the society.
Therefore, in this case, the play displays Prospero as one of the characters who does not respect
the opinions of ladies and women in his family. This kind of fatherhood is termed as bad and that
which discourages healthy relationship between the parents and the offspring (Fences, 2017) .

However, from the very beginning of the story, Miranda and Prospero are portrayed as
being close and hence their relationship is termed is termed as healthy and very close. This is
because Prospero is able to open up to Miranda and in return, Prospero gives a lending ear.
When Miranda hears that her father was being usurped by his stepbrother, she gets really
annoyed and this proves that they were recall close because if they were not, then Miranda could
not have gotten really annoyed by the story. The daughter cares for the father because the father
always gives the love and affection in return. For instance, in the situation when Ferdinard catch
up with Miranda for the very initial time, they communicate with each other in such a romantic
manner and this makes Miranda tell him that “ I might refer to him as a thing that is divine, but
there is nothing I have ever seen natural as so noble like him..” Words like noble and divine give
a close to complete description of how much she adored her lover(Cosby, 2018, 96).
She adores and loves Ferdinard because of the healthy relationship she has with her father
and hence making her acquire a positive attitude towards her lover. Prospero being the strict and
protective kind of a father, he does not like to hear the kind of vibes that the lover directs to the
daughter. In return, he responds to Ferdinand and states that "A word, very good gentleman, but I
have acquired the fear that you have done yourself the very wrong. However, Miranda is not
very happy with the way her father is being forceful with the man that she loves. Nevertheless,
being the father of the lady he has the supreme right to ensure that Miranda gets involved with a
responsible and decent man. In conclusion, Prospero is brought out as a strict but very stern kind
of a father that gives priority to the happiness and protection of her daughter. In this case,
Prospero is the kind of a father that always wanted the very best for his daughter and therefore he
chose to protect her in the very available means(Fences, 2017).

Fathers can be very strict but they should allow their children to develop skills and
nurture the hobbies and talents of their children. Troy did the very opposite. In his point of view,
he refers to fatherhood as the aspect of ensuring that his son acquires opportunities and that he
acquires quality discipline. However, he does not consider the interest of Cory. “Troy insists that
his son should quit playing football..” He gives his reasons that football does not provide a
platform that would develop career and enhance achievement in education and improve work
experience for Cory. Cory feels the pressure that his dad keeps on applying on him and therefore
accuses him of being the most protective and competitive kind of a father. However, Troy
defends himself by saying that he is being very protective and strict on football because he does
not want his son to go through the same process of disappointment like he had gone through
during his baseball career (Carol, 2003, 23).
Anyone would know that Troy seems to be using the past experiences on his brutal
childhood to bring up the son. “ His daddy was very strict, brutal and very controlling. However,
Troy adores his son Cory, He knew no other way that he could bring out the best in his son.”
Troy is portrayed as a bad father and this is due to the fact that he does not provide an ear to his
growing son. “ Troy gives a parental yielding that is of no positive impact in the life of Cory.”
For instance, Troy is not ready to be sincere with his son on whether he likes him or not when
Cory asks him on even the very simple questions. Due to the attitude that Troy brings up the son
with, Cory in return grows up to be a very assertive and rebellious son. Troy, however, dos do
not take action controlling the behavior of his son but rather, he turns out to be more strict
towards the son. The Inability of Troy to allow Cory to pursue his efforts in his interests
diminishes every possible means of building a healthy relationship between the two. “ Due to the
inability of the father to soften his attitude towards his son, Troy ends up pushing his son Cory

away and never acquires any other means that he could use to bring him close again.” From the
audience, they should be able to easily detect that Troy is the kind of a father that does not allow
the child to be true to his dreams and the self-drives in their lives. He is being very strict towards
his son and does not realize that he is pushing Cory away and may never acquire the opportunity
to be with his son again. The same way that he had denied himself the will to have control over
his career in baseball and family, is the same way that he denies Cory the chance to develop
himself. Troy brings out the very worst fatherhood qualities and ends up bringing out the worst
characters in the life of his son Cory.
In the Hal’s Unnamed Father, the kind of fatherhood described in the play brings out the
very best characters that a father should have. In this case, Hal’s father Walter Wilkerson is
termed as a father who is not strict but rather cares so much about the well being of his family.
Since he had come from a wealthy family, he always had the urge to marry from the wealthy
family as well. According to the play, Walter is termed as the father and the head of the family
and therefore all along he always wanted that he would acquire support in marrying Susan. In
this case, he supported the decision of his son to marry Lois and only mistreat her in the darkness
and never let anyone know anything about it. However, Hal's father Walter made it known that
the son had made a mistake in marrying the low-class girl Lois and rather he would have married
Susan. However, Walter in many ways influences the way the rest of the family treats Lois and
this does not bring the best as a father. A father should support the decisions of the son in
marriage because he fell in love. However, Walter does not recognize any of that in Hal but
rather he influences the rest of the family members to gang up against his marriage to Lois.

The Unnamed Hal’s father is displayed as the kind of a father that does not give a lending
ear when Hal reports to him that the rest of the family is mistreating her wife. In this case Walter
instead tickles him but does not attend to the problems that his son could be facing. Hal's father
Walter made it known that the son had made a mistake in marrying the low-class girl Lois and
rather he would have married Susan. However, Walter in many ways influences the way the rest
of the family treats Lois and this does not bring the best as a father. A father should support the
decisions of the son in marriage because he fell in love (Paul, 2012, 1313) . However, Walter
does not recognize any of that in Hal but rather he influences the rest of the family members to
gang up against his marriage to Lois. In the Hal’s Unnamed Father, the kind of fatherhood
described in the play brings out the very best characters that a father should have. In this case,
Hal’s father Walter Wilkerson is termed as a father who is not strict but rather cares so much
about the well being of his family. Since he had come from a wealthy family, he always had the
urge to marry from the wealthy family as well (Fences, 2017) . According to the play, Walter is
termed as the father and the head of the family and therefore all along he always wanted that he
would acquire support in marrying Susan. In this case, he supported the decision of his son to
marry Lois and only mistreat her in the darkness and never let anyone know anything about it.
Therefore Hal’s father is finally exposed to be the kind of father that does not give attention to
the children but rather expects them to behave with a reflection of his expectations.
Conclusion
Troy, Prospero, and Walter display very different characters as compared to the expected
fatherhood characters in the society. Some are strict while others are too protective in such a way
that they end up having a total control over the lives of their children. The three stories give an

Troy, tends to be an eccentric father. The three fathers demonstrate different characters as
compared to the right characters. If compared to the fiction fathers they tend to be very different.
A fiction father is a kind that helps the children to appreciate new things, they help in nurturing
the skills and talents of the children. Fathers should always ensure that they exemplify the very
best characters towards their children as it influences their future characters.
