Rumbles in the Bronx movie analysis
Starred by famous actors such as Jackie Chan and Anita Mui, Rumble in the Bronx is an
action- thriller film that brought many Chinese cultural elements such as Kung Fu martial arts to
the U.S audience. While showing off the fighting and acting skills of Jackie Chan, the movie also
highlights many aspects of how life was like for Chinese immigrants that started a new life in the
U.S. The characters that made this movie possible were Jackie Chan as Keung, Uncle Bill,
Danny(neighbor kid in wheelchair), Auntie Whitney(African American wife of Uncle Bill),
Elena (starring Anita Mui as supermarket boss), Angelo (one of the gang members), Nancy (part
of gang, Danny’s sister), and Tony (gang leader).
The story plot of this movie begins when Keung comes to the US to attend Uncle Bill’s
wedding and helping him transition his store to Elena (Anita Mui). The night before the
wedding, 2 sets of gangs were racing outside of Uncle Bill’s house. Knowing that the
motorcycles will run over Bill’s wedding car, Keung jumps down from the fire escape ladder in
time to distract the driver from damaging for the loaned car for tomorrow’s wedding event.
Troubles continue to happen without rest. Keung gets into the fights with Angelo and his gangs
while they were stealing food in the supermarket a few days after the wedding. With his Kung Fu
skills, Keung scares them all off, however leaving himself as a target for the gangs to mess with
later. One night after work, Keung sees a woman getting raped by a group of people. He goes to

save her, but find out he was tricked by the same gangs he was fighting with. After beating
Keung up, Tony, the leader of the gang got frustrated with his crew, Angelo when he pulled out a
gun. Crawled home after the beat up, Nancy helped Keung after finding out they live in the same
apartment. Keung gets into more trouble by the gang again after waking up from the beating and
walking to work. The gang seemed to not let Keung go. Keung shows off his kung fu skills in
many scenes like climbing several floors in the parking garage, jumping across the garage to
another building, and beating tens of people by himself alone. The market got into a disaster
again by the gang because they were looking for Keung. Keung started to date Nancy who was
the gang leader’s girlfriend after knowing Keung saved his brother Danny. Tony began to let go
of Keung after getting into a fight and knowing Keung was right about living the life of
gangsters was wrong. On the other hand, diamonds stolen by the FBI landed on Angelo’s hand.
The FBI kidnapped Nancy, Angelo, and Tony in search of the diamonds that Keung later finds in
Danny’s cushion. With the help of the police and Keung’s smart ideas, Keung finally saved his
friends from the kidnap.
The cinematography and music was an important element that made this movie so
successful. With Chinese orchestra music playing in the beginning of the movie and showing an
airplane traveling, it manipulates audiences to understand that the character is traveling to
another place. The music begins soft and light, then change to a faster beat to capture audience’s
attention and making the atmosphere happy and exciting to watch the movie. The music also
reflects on the plot of the movie in which Keung starts a happy and simple life in the beginning,
but later encountering dangerous and nervous situations. The fights and dangerous moves played
in Keung’s character like jumping from building to building of makes the movie extra fun to
watch. Without those scenes, Americans would not be interested in watching an Asian guy play

in a movie. Instead of showing a dark or solid lighting place where the fight happened, the lights
during the bullying scene in the alley captures the audience’s attention with its music and
creative lights in the background, supporting the purpose that Tony and Angelo’s crew were
making “fun” of Keung. Also, the lightings used where Tony became friends with Keung after
losing in a fight and knowing that what he did with his crew was not right was a turning point in
the movie that the two characters will end their fights.
Many scenes in the movie have symbolisms that differ from what is plays. For example,
in the scene when Keung enters Uncle Bill’s house, he said “3000 square feet. If I bring it back
to HK, I will be set for life”. Uncle Bill’s phrase symbolizes the American Dream that says
“upward social mobility for the family and children”. Keung mistakes his auntie as the Chinese
lady (Tina) in the market, but later surprisingly finds out that his auntie is African American.
This symbolizes diversity in this movie. When Elena makes the first scene in the movie, she
comes in as a client who is interested in Uncle Bill’s marketplace. Showing how big the
marketplace represents how well Chinese people had flourished in the American land. However,
with the gangsters and fights that follows in the movie, it represents even though Chinese has
made footsteps and a great business in America, Chinese as outlanders are still not as powerful
or equally look upon in America. The fights inside the market add on to the racism point on how
vulnerable Chinese people. Although it was clearly not Elena’s fault for the product damages and
stealing, she had to apologize to the bad guys to make the less trouble and damages to the store.
The boat scene where the FBI were driving it to get away from the police was quite over
exaggerated. The boat was used as a tank.

Rush Hour 2
Rush Hour 2 is a military partner action comedy film that stirs the famous Jackie Chan
and Chris Tucker. Having been released on August 3, 2001, the movie exceeded its antecedent

characters as Jackie Chan as Chief inspector lee, Chris Tucker as Detective James Carter,
Roselyn Sanchez as USSS Agent Isabella Molina, Don Cheadle as Kenny and Zhang Ziyi among
others.
The two main characters in the movie are so lit; they bring out the best relationship
between two cop friends. They are the best perfect characters for this film, the save each other
from trouble, and they play around with each other. When Lee thinks that Carter is dead, he is
devastated and mourns for his friend. They bring out all the humor and martial in the film. Using
the two characters, Lee Chinese and Carter a Black, in the movie breaks down the Hollywood
character of concentrating on the whites and focuses on Asian American and African American
culture. The film breaks down the boundaries of race and change hierarchies, the humor
influences to appreciate their own racial beliefs (Park et al.169).
After the events of rush hour 1, Detective Carter decided to take a vacation in Hong Kong
visiting his friend Inspector Lee. However, their vacation does not last following the bombing at
the United States Consulate General, killing two undercover U.S custom agents. Immediately
Inspector Lee is assigned the case. After a while, Inspector Lee discovers that the case involves
his father’s late friend Ricky Tan. Led by Agent Sterling, the US secret service pick the case.
While Carter is inside Lee’s office, there is an explosion which according to Lee allegedly claims
the life of his friend Carter. He mourns the death of his friend. Surprisingly the cross path at

Hu Li escapes, and Sterling holds Lee responsible for the death of Ricky. He orders Lee off the
case and Carter back to Los Angela’s. On the way to the airport, Carter convinces Lee, and they
both return to LA together.During their flight, Carter informs Lee that in a vast criminal
operation there is a rich man behind it and that he saw Steven Reign, a wealthy billionaire from
Los Angela act suspiciously in the Yacht. Lee and Carter visit Kenny, Carter's friends who run a
gambling den in the back of Chinese restaurant. Lee confirms Reigns counterfeit money, and
they trace it back to the bank.
Both Carter and the Inspector are knocked down unconscious, where they wake up inside
the trucks and escape. They find out Reign is laundering a lot of money through the Red Dragon
Casino. Lee sneaks in to find the plates used to make the fake money while carter distracts the
security. Unfortunately, Lee is captured by Hu Li and is taken to a room where they get to a
fight. An explosion in the Casino sends out all the visitors to safety. Lee heads out to Reign to
prevent him from carrying the plates, while Carter engages in a comic fight with Hu LI. Reign
gets the plates out and tries to run off. Unfortunately, he ran into Ricky. Ricky stabs him to death
after trying to backstab him in the plan. Lee and Carter arrive at the scuffle. Ricky proceeds on
after confessing to Lee that he killed his father who at that time begged him to spare Lee’s Life.
Lee kicks Ricky out of the window causing his death. Hu Li tries to kill herself as the two police.
The escape by holding to the Zipline. At the airport, they decide to go to New York to have fun
using the money Carter had won in the Casino.
Cinematography in the movie is efficiently used to bring out the real action and
fascination of the different scenes of the film. Together with the soundtrack, they made the video
successfully. All the scenes put together creates a very entertaining martial movie. At the first
scene, a lady in black shades walks into a building carrying a briefcase. Few minutes lady the
Surname 6
lady is spotted walking out briskly, and a bomb explodes in the building. These show how the
police force is ignorant to frisk people entering through government agent building. It creates
suspense, and from it, the plot is built. Jackie and Tucker have to find who is behind the killing
of the two US agents.
In the movie, lighting has been used to bring out the best quality of the video. In every
movie making a lot of light is needed at times the sun is not enough. In the scene where Inspector
Lee takes Carter to have some fun a lot of lighting have been used to bring out the best quality of
the video. The room is so bright, and we see Carter confronting Ricky Tan. However, he leaves,
and the two cops are left fighting a good number of bodyguards. The scene is shot inside a room,
and therefore enough light is needed. Light is also used to bring out the mood of the movie. In
the scene where Hu Li enters the room with a bomb, medium light is used. The film is shot at
night there is a bomb explosion which brings out more light and the mood is intense with the two
corps wondering how to save their lives.
The soundtrack is the music used behind the scenes. A sound score is used in between
stages. Different songs are used in various scenes. A sound score sets the tone of the film, brings
out tension and convey the emotions. In rush hour 2, Don’t stop till you get enough is a track by
Michael Jackson used in the scene where Carter and Lee go to a bar, and Carter performs it on
stage. Carter is disappointed with how the guy on the stage shows, he gets there and plays it.
From his face emotions brings out his love for the song and the depth of the meaning of the song.
This intrigues ladies to come on stage and dance with him. The movie starts with the sound score
so lovely and soothing that leaves the audience with as suspense of not what is happening, then
we get Carter and Lee in the car singing. This show a good mood between the two friends. The
soundtrack by Def Jam made the movie so successful and won many awards.

However, Chaibat pushes May from his helicopter. These anger Ka-Kui who chase panther and
the gang over the roads and the rooftops. Chaibat dies after his helicopter collides with a bridge.
Ka-Kui and Yang recapture Chen She gives them the password to the bank account. In the end,
they argue on which country to give the money (Tong, 1995).
In this film, cinematography helps bring out the whole vision of the movie out to the
screen making it very fascinating and exciting. It is precisely displayed at the breathtaking scenes
where Ka-Kui (Jackie Chan) jumps from Kuala Lumpur's railway station to a helicopter, and
when Michelle rolls on and off on a speeding van and later lands on a moving train while riding
a bicycle. The scene is so fascinating and engrossing. The cinematography makes it look real; it
also brings out the whole vision on screen.
Sound scores between the movies bring out the intensity of the different scenes. When
there is a shootout between the gang members, the soundtrack makes the audience alert and have
mixed reactions to what is to happen. The soundtrack sets the mood for a film. The soundtrack
playing behind the scene where Jackie arrives in Chinese and is receiving basic training brings
out the whole humor of supercop. Jackie Chan is introduced to the entire training force. He is
presented to the coach with whom he takes a fight. The soundtrack played, and the voices
produced when they are fighting, and training shows the serious they are on the scene.
The movie has perfect lighting. The lighting is alternated from high, low and medium
light considering the scene. It also brings out the mood in the video. Good lighting brings out the
best quality of videos. Good lighting helps reduce editing in the studio. During the night high
level of light is needed, while during the day a little more light is added. The lighting helps the
audience follow the particular object and not miss the critical aspect of a scene.

Discuss and compare the generic characteristics and historical evolution of Hong Kong martial
arts films and action films in terms of theme, plot, and/or style.
The use of Chinese martial arts in martial art films and action films began a long time
ago. Actually, it has evolved to more than being a mere military defense but a form of
knowledge. Emphasis has been placed on Self-strengthening therapeutic exercise throughout the
evolution of martial arts. The music, sound, acrobatic movement combined with the martial art is
common in the Chinese theater. This gives the Hong Kong movies a sense of origin and
uniqueness from every the action movies. Even in Chinese have had to train in order to take part
in this movies. For instance Detective Carter in Rush Hour 2, he had to train so he could perform
the scenes with martial art. Martial arts in HongKong have a long history explaining its history
and revolutionary process from the early Wong Fei Hong films, to BruceLee and Jackie Chan
however they have shown the importance and value of culture among the Chinese people.
In the 3 films, the plot is well structured and organized to bring out the best meaning and
humor of the films. Introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution are the main
parts of a plot the sequence of events is well arranged in a logical manner so that some parts of
the film do not overlook other parts. In all the films, the introduction is well set to present the
characters and the problem. In Rush hour, the first scene introduces Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan)
Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) and the bombing of the embassy. From there the plot is well
established. In Rumbles in the Bronx, in the introduction, Keung comes to the US to attend his
uncle’s wedding he picks a fight with a gang when distracting them from destroying the hired
wedding car. From the introduction, the plot is set. In super cop, in the introduction we meet Ka-
Kui the supercop, Yang and the assignment he is to perform and the plot begins. The plot is well
organized, there is a climax in all the 3 films and a resolution. All the 3 movies end with a happy
Surname 10
ending. In Rumbles in the Bronx, at the end Keung (Jackie Chan) saves his friend from the
kidnappers, in Rush hour 2 Ricky Tan is killed and the 2 cops plan on a trip to go have fun.
While in Super cop all the drug lords go down and Hong Kong is saved.
The theme is the main idea in a film. The theme is quite hard to identify, unlike the plot.
However, the 3 films have 3 different themes in the context. For instance in Rumble in the
Bronx, the theme of love is displayed when the movie is starting, after a while the theme of
heroism is displayed when Jackie has to save the hired car and his friends from the gang. In Rush
hour 2, the theme of friendship is well displayed. The 2 cops cannot stand each other at times but
they remain, good friends, tolerate each other and beat all odds. The theme of justice, where the
2 cops are hired to find Ricky Tan and give justice to the murdered Agents. In Super cop the
theme of heroism, Ka-Kui is a well-known hero already named super cop due to his well-known
martial arts.
The 3film have been composed using unique styles. In all the 3 films cinematography is
well displayed, sound and scenes arrangements well-choreographed. Dialogues between the
characters are well structured and very clear. The sound is vibrant and the attitude in the different
scenes is well displayed. Making the films of high quality, unique and humorous to watch.
