Folk Healing of American Indians
Introduction
The Native American Indians have persistently been using the folk healing to be able to
maintain their own health while also curing those not fortunate enough to access medical help for
that matter. The folk healing has always been based upon mental, spiritual or even physical
curing. Medicine men from the Native American culture, in particular, have always been
applying the use of therapy while basing most of the practices on their own traditions.
Healing Systems for the Native American Indians
It is prudent to note as Koithan (p.477) alludes to the fact that the healing system for the
Native American has been indeed complementary while providing the alternative medicine
within the medical system, especially for the American Indians matter of fact. The folk healing is
important to them because it often encompasses various treatment measures that can be deemed
as being holistic in a way that can be embraced with ease by the indigenous people as chronic
and even acute conditions continue to be healed. The folk healing has also been important to the
Native American Indians since they have been able to mix healing practices together with other
interventional strategies to bring about healing. The interventional strategies are such as running
every day where their bodies get conditioned as they are nourished spiritually to gain their
wellbeing. The healing system has also been able to apply the use of herbs and prayer in
preventing or even treating certain illnesses in their wake (Koithan, p.477).
The Clear Health Picture brought by Folk Healing
The importance of the folk healing to the Native Americans has been notable in a clear
picture where those who have been able to follow their strict guidelines and procedures given

from the practices have realized longevity, a mental acuity that is indeed sharper together with an
overall wellbeing of their body and even having a good health. Koithan (p.477) ascertains that
the use of the folk healing has even brought them the positive mental health and even a physical
wellbeing that is reminiscent to their mental and emotional capacities. However, in most cases,
their well-being has often been linked to their intrinsic spirituality and the general practices
within their own culture.
Healing Symbolic
According to Koithan (p.478), it is easier for one to realize that the folk healing is indeed
important to the Native American Indians given the fact that it continues to use the essence of
ceremonies to bring about an overall wellbeing for the people by the practices carried out by the
health providers who are also allopathic. Such ceremonies are deemed to be symbolic to them
since they do involve a family of the patient together with the community they dwell within for
the healing to progress successfully. Again, it is alluded to by Koithan (p.478) that such
ceremonial gatherings can be able to last for many days or even going for weeks on end, hence
bringing the healing energy.
Conclusion
The most notable thing about this folk healing to the Native Americans is the fact that the
healing is based on symbolism, as it is associated to cultural traditions such as the ceremonies to
bring about the well-being of the person or even being based upon the church services which can
be incorporated to the treatment process while creating a healing synergy that is indeed very
powerful. Again, the folk healing provides the blueprint for modeling newer healing strategies

which bring about the potential of extending health care promotion in collectiveness (Cohen, p.
13).
