Globalization
Introduction
Different nations around the world have been establishing closer links, but the global
integration pace seems to have increased currently. Additionally, drastic transformations have
occurred in communications, transport as well as computer technologies. The whole world has
now become a village with interdependent production, and consumption of similar goods.
Multinational corporations can now manufacture their products and sell to international
customers with ease. Moreover, the movement of technology, products, and money can now
move rapidly across national borders. It has also become possible to share cultures and ideas for
people around different regions. As such, aspects like social movements and regulations are now
forming at international levels. This paper will analyze how globalization has impacted me as an
individual, as well as how it has influenced the USA in form of socio-cultural, ecological and
technological factors.
Definition
Globalization is an approach that enables businesses and other organizations to develop a
global influence and start operating on an international scale. It involves a free movement of
goods, services, and people across the globe through an integrated and seamless manner. It
emanates from the opening up of international economies and a concomitant increase in trade
between different countries. It also deals with the integration of international business,
investments, cultures and information technologies. The government policies are designed in
ways that enhance opening of economies domestically and internationally to strengthen
development and raise living standards in developing countries. By adopting globalization, many
GLOBALIZATION 3
organizations can achieve competitive advantage through the accessibility of low operating costs,
access to raw materials as well as more markets for their products. The current globalization
boom is a result of technology and public policies which have emanated from the integration of
free economic systems and trade agreements by the governments. Advancements in the
information technology field and information flow across borders have resulted in increased
awareness among the populations.
The United States of America is one of the countries which has experienced globalization
from different perspectives. Despite the spread of American influence around the world, the
country has highly benefited from the practice. First, it has opened up opportunities for more
markets which enable the US to sell its products globally. Multinational corporations have also
increased, and they have a significant influence in various areas. The aspect has also increased
the real-time communication abilities between international firms and countries, leading to a
greater emphasis on international cooperation. With the increased sharing, communication is
now secure among the nations. The American citizens’ living standards have also improved
because they can afford to purchase cheaper products offered by the affordable labor markets.
However, some citizens have lost job opportunities top foreigners willing to work at
lower prices. As such, the American workforce has to compete with people from other countries
or take low paying jobs. Globalization also affects values on issues like democracy, human
rights, and health matters. Some global network foundations like the UN have become transition
mediums for practices they consider culturally positive. While responding to the way the world
is operating on a worldwide level, global fields like UN and World Trade Organizations have
emerged. With the international powers, the agencies can resolve conflicts between countries the
same way as at the national levels.
GLOBALIZATION 4
How Globalization Has Impacted Me as an Individual
Globalization affects various areas of our lives including religion, transport, food, music,
and clothing among others. However, it affects everyone differently depending on various factors
like location, income, and education. From my life experiences, I must admit that globalization
has influenced almost all my decisions in life. First, I have had the opportunity of shopping for
imported items that would otherwise be unavailable if globalization did not exist. For instance,
electronics from all over the world are available at the local stores, and I can easily identify my
favorite brand and purchase it without having to import from the manufacturing country. I also
find myself listening to exciting and educative music genres from all over the world.
Another instance is the convenience stores which stock all manner of foods including
imports from different countries. Once I visit them, I have a variety to choose from and can also
order for what is not available. An example is the supermarkets selling apples from Australia
where clients choose from the wide range. Another area of my life which globalization has
impacted is studies. Unlike in the past when reading materials were only available at the
institution, it is now possible to visit online libraries from other institutions and compare the
available notes from the same course. With the emergence of social media sites, it has also
become possible to engage people in different parts of the globe. Therefore, I have joined
different study groups with students from all over the world, and they usually offer insightful
information.
Apart from studies and local shopping, globalization has also made it easy to shop online.
With the global delivery systems, I am always assured of receiving my products from other
countries in good condition. It is worth noting that all these transactions including payment occur
online and most sellers are in places I have never visited. However, I still get the chance to
GLOBALIZATION 5
sample their produces and determine if I need to order more. Therefore, I can attest that
globalization has been highly beneficial to my life.
How Globalization Has Influenced the Socio-Cultural Aspect in the USA
Although the US plays dominant roles in the cultural globalization phenomena, it is
worth noting that globalization is not entirely dependent on the country and many other countries
also contribute to the global culture. Just like the American popular socio-cultural practices
impact foreign countries, other nations cultures also influence its practices and increase their
presence internationally. With the current interracial mingling in the US, various scholars have
established an emergence of various classes of people. For instance, the Davos Culture group has
members who come from different parts of the world and are highly proficient in English. They
frequently meet to share ideas and get suggestions regarding global economic concerns.
However, they are just businessmen exchanging ideas and do not make policies or regulations
for the governments. This class of people thinks universally as opposed to national terms. They
are also highly skilled and derive numerous benefits from globalization. Additionally, they speak
foreign languages and travel internationally.
Contrary to the past days when the US was self-sufficient with a capable workforce that
required minimal training, the job market has become increasingly competitive, and firms have
to get employees from different countries. With these new developments, the country’s culture
tends to change with people developing inclinations towards groups which share similar
interests. Firms have also adopted diversity, and they can now recruit people from different
cultures which might influence their previous beliefs and practices. Apart from those seeking
employment in the US, immigrants from all over the world have settled in the country, hence
different cultural groups find their way into the system. Therefore, it has become possible to
GLOBALIZATION 6
increase the circulation and exchange of cultural goods including music, films, and clothing. The
art world has also changed its perceptions of people from different regions, and various theatres
now integrate talented actors and actresses from different countries.
A good example is the Hollywood industry which incorporates view from more than one
culture in its films. Despite dominating the world cinema, the movies are subject to influence
from foreign countries. Although globalization does not impose adverse consequences on the
socio-cultural factors, it is evident that peoples continued exposure to international practices can
undermine their cultural identities.
Influence of Globalization on Ecological Factors in the USA
Ecosystems have remained famous for exchanging materials through the movement of
air, flow of rivers, and the migration of animals. However, people have now established
themselves as significant connectivity drivers among the ecosystems. The world is also
becoming interconnected by people’s movement and transportation of goods both locally and
globally. As such, ecologists have identified a profound influence on the ecological systems
long-term dynamics. The transport of numerous materials including gases, minerals, and
organisms has resulted in adverse impacts in the natural systems. Green lash which emanates
from environmental changes has been inevitable. Since people share similar global
environments, it is evident that they depend on each other while protecting it.
Due to the increase in globalization practices; people have resorted to the introduction of
non-native animals, plants and diseases in new places. Additionally, invasive pathogens and
species including fire ants from Southern America and the Chinese SARS virus could create vast
and expensive challenges currently, the US government spends approximately 120 billion dollars
annually on measures that prevent and eliminate invasive species. Understanding the connections
GLOBALIZATION 7
in the ecosystem from local to continental levels enables the scientists to determine areas that
invasive species might attack.
Globalization has also resulted in increased consumption of products which has led to an
adverse impact on the ecological cycle. Due to the continued requirement of goods for use,
production increases, resulting in the stressing of the environment. There has also been an
increase in transporting of food and raw materials from one location to another. People used to
consume locally-grown food in the past, but after globalization, they now consume products
from foreign countries. The fuel consumption in the transportation of these products leads to
increased pollution levels in the environment. Other concerns like landscape intrusion and noise
pollution also emerge. Gases from aircraft traveling to different countries to the US have also
resulted in depletion of the ozone layer and increasing of greenhouse effects.
Emission of waste from the industries also leads to pollution, mainly when the firms
dispose of it in the oceans. Throwing of chemicals into the soil encourages the growth of
dangerous plants and weeds that adversely impact the productive areas. It also interferes with the
plants' genetic makeup and strains the available land resources. The human innovations like
cutting across the mountains to make highways and tunnels, as well as invading vast barren lands
to erect buildings, have long-term impacts on the environment. On the other hand, different US
organizations package both local and export products in plastic. The same case is also applicable
in organizations that export their products to the US. It is worth realizing that plastic is a toxic
pollutant because of its non-biodegradable nature and causes large-scale environmental
pollution.
The globalization practices have been under massive scrutiny in the past due to the
suspected participation in global warming. In response to the rising concerns, new policies like
GLOBALIZATION 8
the Kyoto protocol have emerged to address matters regarding how to reduce emissions from
greenhouse emissions. Kyoto is a global agreement which makes various parties to decrease
greenhouse gas emissions due to the global warming emanating from human-made emissions.
Therefore, individual countries should apply different capabilities for combating climate change.
Since the US seems to be the central point of all globalization activities, it is vital to adopt
strategies that will stop the ecological destruction before more damage occurs.
Influence of Globalization on Technological Factors in the USA
Globalization has substantially accelerated the transformation in US technology by
ensuring that industries keep innovating to stay up to date with the emerging issues. The
transformation pace is so fast that people are always struggling to keep up with the new
inventions and update their devices to match the current needs. One of the most affected areas is
the declining cost and increased processing power of the digital technologies. Rapid
advancements in fiber optics are also vital in the IT revolution. The technology enables the
gathering of information including capturing of copies in digital form. Numerous technological
companies have leveled the baseline producing of new technologies to points where they look for
new avenues for product improvement.
Transforming the technology sector in the US market led to an increased need for
software developers, computer system analysis as well as managers. Such new opportunities in
the globalized technological world are essential especially for firms recruiting from
technologically advanced nations. From the look of things, the growing market for technological
jobs will keep increasing due to the continued integration within the society.
Conclusion
GLOBALIZATION 9
Globalization has become widely applicable in all nations, and it is now impossible to
live without it. Various countries have embraced its activities which are mainly beneficial to the
citizens. Among the most affected areas is the socio-cultural, ecological and technological.
However, globalization also impacts other aspects both positively and negatively. Therefore, it is
vital to embrace it to remain at par with the other countries. It has also affected various areas of
my life including the way I shop, study and perceive multiple life issues. The impact of
globalization on the socio-cultural factors is a challenging aspect, primarily due to the emergence
of technology which has dissolved the international boundaries. It provides both favorable and
adverse influences on the country. The demographics in the USA have drastically changed with
more people joining the country for greener pastures. Other effects of globalization include a
reduction in the agricultural genetic diversity which involves loss of livestock breeds and crop
varieties, loss of wild species, air pollution as well as resource exhaustion. It is challenging to
rely on the market to control the environment and globalization costs.
