The Impacts of Divorce
Marriage, being a morally accepted union between two people in a relationship, comes
with a lot of expectations and anxiety mostly when the couple settles down with little knowledge
of their partners. The expectations mostly revolve around the financial ability, health condition,
moral behavior and many more. However, when such hopes are not realized well, the marriage
may end up being dissolved leading to termination of marital union and cancelation or
restructuring the distribution of marital responsibilities. There are several causes of divorce,
ranging from internal challenges in the marriage to external issues but the main ones include lack
of proper communication and understating, laziness, irresponsibility, and infidelity among
couples.
Impacts of Divorce on Families
Divorce may take place at any stage of marriage, at early stages before getting children or
at advance marriage stage in the presence of children. The phase of marriage at which divorce
takes place dictates how severe the divorce impacts on the affected parties (Miller 2016).
Termination of marriage at an early stage before children may not have a lot of effects as
compared to divorce with children already in play. The separation affects all the involved parties
but to varying extent. The engaged couples usually end up lacking trust on almost everyone; feel
used and betrayed wasted time and the guilt of not being a responsible person in the society. The
process has financial consequences the legal fees involved in related court cases. Such feelings
have long-lasting damaging effects on the victims with some ending up developing mental and
psychological problems.

Impacts of Divorce on Children
Another group that usually feels the pinch the most is the affected children. It should be
noted that in most cases children do not have a direct say in the decision-making process
regarding their future after divorce. The events before separation are sometimes very destructive
to children, as they may witness physical fights and use of vulgar language by the parents.
Parents do go out of control and stop being rational hence doing and or saying things that affect
their children's brain development, impair their judgment and stop trusting their parents. As
illustrated by Kalmijn (2015), such events before final termination of marriage mostly affect how
the children reason and behave. In cases of an irresponsible parent, parentified children end up
taking the roles of perceived irresponsible parent, and this may lead to lack of respect to the
parent and the children developing some unacceptable behaviors.
Divorce cases that involve residence challenges may lead to children living with one
parent or a third party such as aunts. Such circumstances can as well result in the children being
separated, the parents or third parties taking some children while other siblings live somewhere
else. Children affected by such situations end up lacking parental love and guidance, a fact that
negatively impacts their confidence as compared to others in school (Amato & Anthony 2014).
They feel they do not have someone to report to when wronged by other children and they lack
someone with whom to share their problems. The change of residence affects the school life as
many children in such condition have to change school and their peers. Different parenting styles
experienced mostly under the third party may cause a lot of damage to the child’s development.

Real Life Effects of Divorce on Children
Children who have experienced divorce scenarios in their lives are vulnerable to mental
and psychological disorders than their counterparts with no such experience. Such children
handle their challenges violently, and their judgments are mostly impaired (Amato, & Anthony
2014). It is further realized that suicide cases among children are more common among children
with prior divorce experience than the other with no such experience. Such cases are attributed to
the fact that the affected children feel they do not have proper protection, they have to defend
themselves hence the excessive force as a defensive mechanism. When overwhelmed with their
life challenges and they feel their parents are not available to guide them, they resort to suicide.
Conclusion
Research done by Kalmijn (2015) shows the divorce have a lot of adverse effects on the
victims mostly children. Such situations can be prevented when parents consider the welfare of
the children and put the children before concluding to divorce. The effects on children can be
addressed by doing proper counseling to children and carrying out proper follow up to address
the emerging issues in their lives. According to Miller (2016) if their wellbeing is considered
well, divorce can be avoided or at least reduce its impacts on families.
