Introduction
Home schooling has now become a normal phenomenon with many parents opting for
this type of learning for their kids instead of the traditional private and public schools. Research
by the National Home Education Research Institute indicated that homeschooling is growing at
2% to 8% percent annually and has even been adopted in other various countries (Ray, 2018).
The various advantages and benefits that children gain from such schooling has made more
parents interested. This has not been without criticism and some opposing views.
There are those who see homeschooling as a limited form of learning compared to
traditional forms of learning. This is due to some of the limitations to include peers, exposure,
and socialization. This is attributed to the fact that home schooling is mostly carried out by the
parents and there is no much exposure or interactions with other peers as in traditional schooling.
The limited exposure limits the child’s socializing abilities and may sometimes lead to phobias
(Raise Smart Kid , 2015). Home schooling has been associated with isolation from outside
worlds and limited interactions. The child is mostly with the parents and does not get to associate
with many compared to the traditional schooling system.
Traditional schooling involves interaction with other peers in school settings teachers and
other authoritative figures. Interaction in such environments enables the child gain social skills
and learn to obey authorities. This has been a used by many critics to discredit homeschooling
since the children are mainly around their parents and are not exposed to other authoritative
figures. Home schooling may also be very ineffective in cases where the parents are not qualified
for the task. Education may be limited and the child may understand aspects based on the parents
biasness. This may limit the scope of the child’s knowledge that would lead to close mindedness
and in other cases bigotry (Raise Smart Kid , 2015). This is not so in traditional schooling

systems where only qualified teachers are allowed to teach the kids and the class settings allows
for the children to debate issues. The limited social setting has been seen as a limitation to a
child’s learning in homeschooling.
Some of the arguments provided against home schooling system may be right since no
one system is perfect. There are certain special cases where homeschooled students don’t get as
much learning as expected. This may take place in situations where parents are not well
connected and do not understand how to go about home schooling their children. It has been
noted that homeschooling requires a lot of dedication and funding to be effective. This however
does not discredit the effectiveness of homeschooling. Compared to traditional schooling
homeschooling results in far reaching benefits for the kids as explained below.
A comparison on the academic statistics on both homeschooled students and traditional
schooled students indicate that, homeschooled students on average outperform their peers on
standardized tests. This indicates that there are far more reaching benefits in homeschooling
compared to traditional schooling (Smith, 2015). The ration of students and teachers has been
seen a good predictor of success in the education system. Contrary to the traditional system
homeschooling involves a one to one ration. This means that the teacher is able to focus more on
the students and their understanding capabilities before advancing. Due to the small ration the
teacher is able to customize the curriculum based on the child’s strength and weaknesses. This is
also done in a very short period of time which leaves time to focus on other extra-curricular
activities (Galivan, 2010).
The parent is also able to provide a safe learning environment for the students. In many
traditional schools there are many cases of bullying, teasing and negative peer pressure. This can
be very demoralizing for many kids and can lead to a hectic time in school. At home the student

is given an ample time and environment to study and learn. This way they are able to develop
critical thinking skills and independent understanding. Unlike the children in traditional settings
the kids are not likely to follow any ideas of peer pressure, they are able to make up their own
minds. This is very useful as children grow up which gives homeschooled kids an advantage
since they are able to learn it very early in life.
There are many reasons that critiques have given in their opposition against
homeschooling most of which can be mitigated. Socialization is one such reason, parents can
have their children join community organizations or even socialize with other homeschooling
kids. This is possible since in homeschooling the small teacher to student ratio allows the student
cover same amount of material in traditional school but in way less more time. The tailoring of
the curriculum allows the parents to focus on the child’s gifts and capabilities and also provides
ample time to pursue their interests. Tim Tebow is one such beneficiary of the homeschooling
system and ended up being a football star. He has since been one of the high profile advocates
for homeschooling (Berliner & Glass, 2014).
Technological innovations especially in communication technologies has helped make
homeschooling a lot easier. This has provided communication platforms and access of resources
more easily. This has resulted in schools developing online programs for homeschooled kids due
to the realization of the multiple benefits. Homeschooling benefits outweigh the disadvantages
which can be mitigated. This therefore indicates that homeschooling is a better way for students
to learn and grow since the tutors can ensure genuine learning is taking place.
