Introduction
Homosexuality is sexual attraction to or interest in members of one’s own sex. The word
homosexual is used synonymously with the word gay. Female homosexuals are called lesbians.
During different eras and in various cultures, homosexuality has been frowned upon, banned,
punished or even tolerated and approved of. In ancient Rome and Greece, homosexuality was
common as adult men related to adolescent males. Many religions of the world have considered
homosexuality to be a sin. Many Christian and Jewish leaders have taken it upon themselves to
declare that their religions forbid the actions of homosexuals. There are some Christians from
fractions of mainstream Protestantism and Reform rabbis that advocate that homosexuals should
be accepted into the church as well as their actions. As such, this is a controversial topic that
threatens to cause divisions in some Christian denominations. Homosexuality, however, remains
a sin for most Christians who owe their allegiance to the scriptures. Despite the arguments made
by some of the Christian denominations that homosexuality is accepted in the Bible, it remains
clear that the Bible strongly proscribes homosexual behavior. This research paper seeks to know
the response of Christianity to homosexuality. Rather than looking at the individual opinions of
Christian leaders which could be biased, this research paper will use evidence from sacred religious
Christian books as well as the Bible to show how Christians respond to homosexuality.
The religious views concerning homosexuality have interfered with the way the
psychological and medical aspect of same-sex relationships are viewed. Although it could be true
that same-sex relationships are much less destructive of the society in terms of culture and social
ideals that are perceived because of the fact that it is more widespread than people think, it is not

approved of in Christianity to a great extent. For those Christians that see homosexuality as a social
evil, reparative therapy is emphasized through counseling, behavior modification and prayer

.
Christianity proscribes homosexuality and promotes heterosexuality and bisexuality. The
debate on how Christians should respond to homosexuality has been here with us for decades, and
it does not seem it will come to an end anytime soon. The two aspects have caused conflict for the
homosexuals that practice Christianity
2
. It goes without saying that some people see the
combination of Christianity and homosexuality as contradictory, but there are still people that
believe Christians whose sexual orientation is homosexuality should abandon neither Christianity
nor this sexual orientation of theirs
3
. The decision that these people have taken of practicing
homosexuality alongside Christianity has called for various responses from both the church and
the other Christians. The responses given by the various people and Churches are quite different;
while some are sympathetic, others are hostile, discriminating or even rejecting. In the middle of
this negativity, there are still some positive responses.
In their negative responses to homosexuality, Christians cite what the Bible says about it.
Many Christian theologians believe that in the whole of the Bible, homosexual tendencies are

frowned upon

. In the Old Testament, the book of Leviticus, as well as the Biblical account of
Sodom and Gomorrah, are the well-known passages which address the issue of homosexuality. In
the New King James Version, it is stated in Leviticus 18:22 that one must not engage in sexual
activities with another man like they would with a lady because it is considered an abomination.
The same idea is echoed in chapter 20 verse 13 which says that a man that commits a sexual
activity with another as they would with a woman has sinned and, therefore, should be killed.
According to Henry, a Bible historian, the reason for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was
the detestable immoral behavior of their citizens which had then been accepted as the way of life
in these cities

.
In the New Testament, also, many scriptures show homosexuality as being an abomination
for Christians. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Paul teaches the Corinthians that men who are involved in
homosexuality will not inherit God’s Kingdom. This shows that God does not approve of this act
and therefore is not fit for Christians who believe in God
6
. Paul continues to condemn
homosexuality in the first letter he writes to Timothy in Chapter 1 verse 10 where he also says that
homosexuality is not a natural practice. He says, among other things, that homosexuality is not a
sound doctrine. In the same letter, Paul says in chapter 1 verses 26 and 27, “…because of this, God

gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for
unnatural ones. 27 In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and
were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and
received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Christians tend to quote these verses and
base their argument that homosexuality is detestable on them. They say that the Bible is very clear
on this
7
.
However, Christianity has many denominations which interpret Christianity and the Bible
in different ways. Different Christians hold different positions in the debate of Christianity and
homosexuality. The contrasting points of view have their basis in the different Bible
interpretations. Christians arguing against homosexuality hold that the purpose of sex was solely
made for procreation. However, not all Christians hold this position, there are others who believe
that enjoying sex is not sinful. These hold that in the eyes of God, it is not detestable if a married
couple engages in sexual intercourse not for procreation but for pleasure. Of all the Christian
denominations, only the Catholic Church of Rome still maintains that sex was created by God
solely for purposes of procreation and, therefore, that sex is a sin if it is engaged in for purposes
other than procreation.
Christians also respond to homosexuality by saying that there were no examples of
relationships in the Bible that were homosexual and that it is not natural for one to be homosexual.
They hold that homosexuality is not in line with God’s plan for human beings. Some even believe

that homosexuality could lead to the destruction of the marriage system
8
. These ones say that all
marriages as God made it should be heterosexual and things other than this are not legitimate. On
the other hand, liberal Christians believe that the reason homosexuality is not presented in the
Bible is that the Bible is culturally limited. They argue that since the Bible was written many years
ago, it may not be relevant to today’s culture. They link it to the issue of polygamy that was
accepted in the olden times but is not today. Another argument made by Christians who stand
against homosexuality is that it is not acceptable because in the Bible God says so. Some Christian
denominations interpret the Bible just as it is written and hold that it should be followed that way
whether we understand the reason for it or not
9
. Those who respond favorably hold that rejecting
homosexuality does not represent God’s love for all. Some believe that rejecting homosexuality
does not arise from Christian doctrine
The response of Christians to homosexuality is also based on the premise that when you
choose to be a Christian, you should take your own cross and follow Jesus. This means abandoning
some lifestyles that are not considered suitable for a Christian. In this case, homosexuality is such
one a habit. If one is a Christian, therefore, they are not expected to be homosexuals because it is
just not in line with the doctrines of Christianity. As such, the disapproval of the church for
homosexuality can be justified. In fact, homosexuality should be out of the question in
Christianity
10
. According to most Christians, the two cannot coexist and will never coexist

favorably. Most Christians hold that the scriptures are timeless and so what was written at the time
the Bible was written applies even today
11
. This is despite the claims of some liberals that the story
of Sodom and Gomorrah does not mean that the people were punished because of their
homosexuality but because of not showing hospitality to the angels in the house of lot.
In conclusion, although there are Christians who believe that one can be both a Christian
and homosexual, the greatest number hold that the two cannot coexist and base their claims on the
scriptures which are believed to daunt homosexuals at every turn. Those who oppose
homosexuality, however, do not say that homosexuals should be chased away from the church.
They propose corrective therapies in the form of prayer and behavior change to make these people
acceptable to the church of God. A close look at Christian doctrine in the Christian context will
help one understand that there is nothing in the Bible that is supportive or even tolerant of
homosexuality. All the verses that address this issue link it with abomination and punishment from
God. While the Old Testament says that homosexuals should be put to death, the New Testament
says that homosexuals cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. However, Christians do not allow
themselves to think that homosexuals do not deserve respect and love, those that are against
homosexuality try their best to reform homosexuals so that they can fellowship with them.
