HOSTILITY AND NELSON MANDELA
How Nelson Mandela dealt with hostility a quality for resilience.
Mandela will ever be remembered for his undying spirit upon which he hoped with all his
soul and heart to have apartheid in South Africa come to an end. He harnessed remarkable
energy, intelligence together with resilience towards the betterment of South Africa more than
half a century. It is worth noting that most of his time during this period he spent it in prison.
Nevertheless, despite all the hostility he encountered, at all times inspired hope and a lot of
resilience to millions of people not only Africa but also across the world all who worked with
him in the fulfillment of what he hoped most. Mandela also showed great resilience during his
last days especially when he was ‘unstable’ and hospitalized (Moodley p.9).
Some of the Mandela’s inspiring words quoted from his book include:
”It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
“Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world.”
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is
not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
“Honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, pure generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve
others – qualities which are within easy reach of every soul – are the foundation of one’s
spiritual life.”
