How Amazon Changed The Way People Do Their Shopping
The late 20th and the 21st century has been an era dominated by extreme advancements in
technology leading up to the rise of social media and online shopping era. Consumers in this era
want what they want and efficiently without having to disrupt their daily activities or pay for a
premium for the service. Online shopping was an idea first introduced by Amazon online store in
1994 which was founded and headed by its CEO Jeff Bezos. However small it was back then, its
impacts in the consumer and retailer industry cannot be explained by plain words. Influenced by
Amazon and speeded up by other aspects such as technological advancements such as
smartphones have all been the main contributors to the vast and wide growth that Amazon has
faced in less than three decades of operation. It is clear that Amazon has changed the way people
do shopping as evidenced by the following points which will be discussed in the paper. First, its
emergency opened the door for a lot more online stores all competing for the same customer base
which makes them end up giving unbeatable deals. Innovativeness in the industry to ensure they
maintain a competitive market. As a result of Amazon, the world of business has been further

brought closer, and a person in Asia can purchase goods in America and have them delivered in
2-3 days.
Amazon today is among the world’s most valuable corporation; it is difficult for many to
believe that it was a small online bookstore. Which later moved on to sell music, movies, and
games and has grown to what it today sellers of everything in the world. A hundred of thousands
of goods are sold and shipped all over the world. Their massive growth comes with a great deal
of influence on other online retail companies and even customer choice which has enabled them
to become the people choice of shopping for an extended period. The dictate new trends in town,
do everything in their power to ensure that they remain on top and more people endorse online
shopping as compared to the traditional stores shopping (Statt).
Amazon being one of the world's largest online retailer has influenced how the online
business is carried out, its effect is felt by both the customers as well as other online stores. It has
dramatically affected the business set up in various ways such as the introduction of smart
speakers which is more of an advancement in technology for the company. This has changed the
world of online shopping in the sense that you do not need a smartphone or computer to order
your goods. Instead, you need to talk to Alexa the smart speaker and make your order.
Technological advancement has played a vital role in Amazon working out as one of its
stronghold business strategies. The introduction of these smart speakers helps the company in
better understanding their customers purchasing patterns, which is a win as they can better their
services following their customer’s behavior. Use of drones which is a project underway (Prime
Air) in delivering goods and services is a revolutionary which when fully effected will change
online shopping. Customers can return their purchases with ease which therefore provides a
chance to get that which satisfies you (Diehl, and Bill).

Amazon has a more significant influence on the customer service which in broader terms
has impacted on the online shopping industry. This is by establishing the one day and two-day
shipping for the Amazon Prime. It is a program that ensures efficiency and convenience in
delivering goods and services to their customers locally and internationally. It has also
introduced free shipping services to its Prime members around the country providing a more
significant market for their products and more value to their customers. Which poses a threat to
its competitors as they are faced with the challenge of offering the same services to ensure they
retain their customers. The existence of a support system that is efficient and ready to respond to
customer queries provides an interactive online shopping experience which is one of the changes
brought out in online shopping. It makes decision making as well as shopping easier since help is
readily available which is good as it is expert advice from their support team. It has made the
world a global village as verified customers can review their experience with Amazon and
purchases made from around the world helping other willing buyers on choosing the best
providing a customer review platform aids in hearing them out and in case of complaints
rectifying the problem quickly and fast a service brought in by online shopping.
Stores such as Walmart are faced with problems of keeping up with the growth and
innovation of Amazon an online retail firm. Introduction of groceries supplies by Amazon Fresh
poses a competition challenge to major groceries stores. Their convenience and fast shopping
encourage customers to choose Amazon Fresh over going to get groceries from the store.
Therefore these stores are challenged to keep up and offer the same services to retain their
customers (Riter). Amazon is generally changing online shopping as it tries to carve a niche of
its own through the production of its brands under the name Amazon Basics. Individuals now
have to choose between convenience and efficiency provided by Amazon to the services offered

by other brands, which offers high competition to other firms operating as online stores and those
that do not but dealing with the same line of products. Once more Amazon keeps expanding to
greater heights making it hard for their competitors to keep up, for example through the
expansion of Shipping with Amazon which entails a cargo port in Kentucky. This puts the
company far ahead of its competitors, making them the dominant market player (Ives, Kathy,
and Dennis).
The tremendous success that Amazon enjoyed as an e-commerce site led to the
introduction of many more stores on the market, this had a ripple effect on not only Amazon
which was leading but also other e-commerce sites such as eBay and Alibaba in China. With
well-developed algorithms and tests as well as user data available they can bring in preferred
personalized items to purchase after having analyzed the consumer behavior of the customer.
The results will be a more satisfied customer who got what they wanted just at the suggestions
and for the right price. Being given such experience every time you go shopping your behaviors
tend to change entirely and get hooked to shopping in the platform as opposed to traditional
stores. Amazon and other E-commerce sites are taking advantage of the social media boom in the
sense that people are spending more time online. And in most times they see new trends in
fashions and ads that frequently pop up, due to impulse buying and the availability of means and
platform a person's desires will be fed easily without having to break a sweat on the traditional
stores. All these are different ways that Amazon has changed the way people around the conduct
their businesses (Fulgoni p 6)
In conclusion, it will be fair to give Amazon and its team of management for the strides
they have grown. With their kind of market conditions, they have been faced. Technology and
social media have played a significant role in the growth of online shopping. Amazon, however,
Surname5
emerged as the most influential company due to its growth and passion and ambition to conquer
the world. On the process of achieving their goals, mission, and vision they have changed the
way people do their shopping nowadays. Before it was traditional stores and today, it is by a
click or a word depending on the level of technology available to you. Which has since
threatened traditional stores and brands existence as more and more people prefer the efficiency
and cost effectiveness that comes with ordering and waiting for the product at home? Amazon's
success and shifting the way businesses are managed which leads to the emergence of many e-
commerce sites as well as the additional of an online wing for the existing traditional stores to
cope with the competition and changing market conditions. Technology and the internet have
reached even the most remote of place means that potential customers are ever increasing and e-
commerce will only keep getting more success.
