How Does Music Help Us Reduce Stress and Anxiety?
Music has a soothing power that produces some relaxing effects on the mind of human
beings. Stress and anxiety are a factor of accumulated tension of things that are not desirable and
others demanding issues respectively. The soothing effects of music can reduce the fear of such
demanding thoughts hence a useful stress management tool. The entertaining nature of music
generates happiness in human being, which helps to counter the adverse effects of being stressed
or anxious. 
To start with, slowed classical music has significant relaxing effects on the human mind
and thus a suitable option to help restore the normal physiological functioning of the brain. The
soothing effects help to normalize both the heart and pulse rates in addition to lowering the levels
of stress hormones in the circulation. A stressed or anxious person will end up lowering their
blood pressure by listening to soothing music at low tones. It is advisable that a stressed person
avoids loud music as it tends to reduce the soothing effects of music. Songs that contain
comforting messages work well for people suffering from mental disorders included in a given
song.
Secondly, listening to music absorbs the attention of a person such that distraction erupts
making it possible to explore the emotions of a person. Distracted attention means that the person
stops thinking about bothering issues as one tries to comprehend the message contained in the
music. A person listening to music gets to a meditation mood, which helps to reduce the tension
of the stressors acting on their brain. Once the mind or attention of undergoes some diversion,
the person tends to forget some things that might be a bother as they pay attention to something
else (Thoma et al., 2015). Music is a proper consideration that can be used to manage the
depressive states of a person in an event a person suffers from any of the side effects indicated
for anti-depressants.
Thirdly, music serves as therapy for several mental disorders for persons suffering from
depressive conditions. Music is known to influence some regions of the brain, which help to
reduce the amount of anxiety that a person might have developed. It thus acts as a natural therapy
which is safer than using the common anti-depressants indicated of people suffering from
depression or extreme cases of anxiety. The positive effects of using music therapy are evident in
pregnant mothers (Liu et al., 2016). Listening to music helps to manage their stressful conditions
which keep on developing from time to time during pregnancy.
Lastly, listening to favorite music helps to generate happy moods to the listener. The
happiness associated with listening to a favorite piece plays a significant role in reducing both
the stress and anxiety levels in a person. Some of the songs selected act as a source of
consolation to a stressed person whereby some people will end up listening to certain music
whenever they are stressed or anxious. The extent which a given song can be soothing is
dependent on the preferences of a person, and personal interpretation of the message contained.
Such an explanation means that one song can end up with different soothing effects when used
on different people. People who like a given song end up benefiting from it more than people
who lack prior exposure or audience to such a song.
