Research Proposal 2
HOW PRIVATE TUTORING AFFECTS STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN FORMAL
SCHOOLING IN SINGAPORE.
ABSTRACT
Currently private tutoring has occurred to be an important part in Singapore’s education system
with the highest number of primary school students receiving private tuition. The demand of
private tuition has gained popularity around the world. Conversely, the effectiveness of the
private tutoring has been faced with challenges and its effectiveness is still mixed. With respect
to Singapore education system, this research focuses on the effects of private tutoring on the
student formal schooling.
With the system focusing on the evaluation of student performance on regular basis, the quality
of education is considered to be crucial since evaluation results will be determined by how
access to quality education. Therefore, quality of education determined by the learning
environment is directly determined by the students’ attention to classroom learning.
Problem Statement
Academic achievement is determined by the level of effort put towards quality education. The
increasing demand for the academic improvement has made important implications for the
education system in Singapore. Due to thus high demand for private tutoring and the escaped
attention by researchers in this area, my proposal seeks to evaluate performance of students in
formal schooling as compared to private tutoring performance. This is because students’
performance is directly proportional to the student participation in classroom environment.
