If Only You Knew Me
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon filled with a jovial mood and synchronized bird calls
creating a musical symphony that made everyone happy for no apparent reason. For this sole
reason, it would be impossible for anyone to realize that this was the World War II era. It was
sacredly peaceful. The weather was perfect for outdoor activities with the sun shining gently
and the wind blowing swiftly to create a cool sensation on the skin. No one appreciated the
weather and mood more than Genevieve. She liked playing with his friends outside. You
could not miss the ear-to-ear grin on the 9-year old girl as it dominated the child’s face in a
manner that highlighted her crystal blue eyes. As the wind blew through her long brown hair
in a hypnotist motion, she magically appeared to be taller than she was due to the elevation
effect. She was not yet done playing when her mother, the wife of a German commandant,
called out her name and asked her to join her family for some refreshments. Upon her arrival
into their home, Genevieve was surprised to find their family maid, Joseline, pulling her
belongings from the wardrobe into a wooden crate. Even though Joseline was usually silent
and in low spirits, Genevieve could tell that she was not happy packing her belongings.
As an inquisitive child, Genevieve did not hesitate to ask Joseline, in her usual high
pitched voice that was full of happiness, what she was doing and why she did it. Gently,
Joseline responded pointing at the staircase at the edge of the room, “I would tell you kiddo,
but it would be better coming from your mother. Genevieve’s mother, a tall red-headed lady
with an elegant poise, was coming up the staircase. She nervously rubbed her hands against
each other. Instantly, Genevieve knew that her mother was preparing to tell her something

that would change her moods. Genevieve was scared. Mother, what’s going on?” She asked
her mother in a frail voice full of fear and anticipation. “Joseline is packing her belongings
my love,” Genevieve’s mother responded in a somewhat guilty voice. Being something
unfamiliar, Genevieve quickly started analyzing Joseline’s actions over the past few days in
the hopes of finding out whether she had been particularly naughty or disrespectful to her
parents. Her efforts were not fruitful as Joseline was often at her best to the point that
Genevieve's father commended her; something he rarely does even with his wife.
Genevieve’s mother tried her best to be dismissive, but the inquisitive nature of her child
could not allow for that to happen. Finally, she broke out, We are moving my love. When
someone becomes excellent at their job, their boss asks them to take their skills somewhere
else.” Immediately, Genevieve knew her mother was talking about her father, a German
commandant with a “cool” uniform and zero tolerance for indiscipline and disrespect. This
was just about all that Genevieve knew about her father. She was not entirely sure what her
father’s job was.
A few days later, it was time for the family to move to their new house. Genevieve’s
mother gave the five-floored mansion one last look as if she would never see it again. Outside
the house was the family maid Joseline, the cook Judah, and the chauffeur John. Everyone
seemed sad as if they knew that there was a possibility that they would never see the house
and their friends again. In fact, it was as if they all knew that they were going to a less
homely environment that was nothing close to their home in Berlin, Germany. Genevieve
was devastated by the fact that she had to leave her friends. Even so, it was set that they were
moving miles away from Berlin to their new home regardless of their sentiments towards the
shift.

The reaction everyone had after seeing their new home was the same; they were all
surprised and could not hold back the disappointment and emotional uncertainty. Even so,
Genevieve’s reaction was the most eminent. She not only opened her eyes wide open but also
made an O-shaped gesture with her mouth as a result of the surprise. She stretched out her
arms on her side; something she did when she was utterly surprised. The difference between
their home in Berlin and their current one was evident on all their faces. The house in Berlin
was not only bigger but also on a nice quiet street with other big houses. On the other hand,
the new house was not only significantly smaller but also located in an empty and desolate
street. Genevieve was terrified of the place as it had no signs of children her age. She had to
put up with her elder brother Gingler who was a control freak and never let Genevieve do
anything that signified she was more powerful or superior to him. Even though Genevieve
was bold and confident, she was secretly scared of her brother. His brother’s friends also
made fun of her, and she did not like it.
One day when Genevieve was looking for some solace outside their house, she
decided to look out f the window at the corner of her room in the hopes that she could see
Berlin. As she slowly approached the window, she had numerous fears as she neither knew
what to expect nor whom her eyes could come across. After approaching the window, she
realized that there were other children but they were not as friendly as those from their
original home. She did not hesitate to share her sentiments with her brother who had loosened
up and agreed with her that their new home was not as pleasant. When Genevieve and her
brother decided to have a look at the children through the window, they both realized that it
was not what they expected. While Genevieve initially saw children, they could now see
older people. These people did not appear to be happy and they seemed to lack something.
They were not a family yet they all stayed there together; children, grandfathers and boys

who were presumably older than Gingler. The most unusual observation was that there were
no girls and women.
After a series of deep thoughts and intense contemplation, Genevieve and her brother
Gingler realized that the people were under some sort of supervision. The people stood still
with their heads up and their arms straight on their sides when soldiers passed next to them.
They were not happy. They were looked untidy and dirty by the appearance of the clothes
that they wore. Was it a school? The children could not come up with a valid explanation
even after they separately contemplated what they had just seen. Either way, Genevieve made
up her mind that she would try her best to makes friends with some of the children she had
seen when an opportunity presented itself.
One Saturday morning, Genevieve decided to go out and play by herself as she did
not have any friends yet. To her surprise, she met a small shabbily dressed boy who was not
only sad,but also lonely and injured. Being the social child she was, Genevieve decided to
seek the company of the boy. “Maybe he could be my first friend here now that it seems this
is our new home,” she silently thought to herself. Upon their first conversation, Genevieve
realized that the boy was in the same clothing as the children she had seen through her
bedroom window. This was the onset of their conversation. After a while, they seemed to be
well-acquainted with each other. In fact, Genevieve realized that her birthday was on the
same day as the boy’s, whose name was Jamzil. Genevieve also realized that they were not in
Germany as she had thought all along. They were in Poland. Having realized that she could
learn a lot from the boy, Genevieve made the agreement to meet him at the same place the
following day.
The following day, Genevieve met Jamzil at the fence and they talked more about
random subjects. One of the most eminent points of discussion was their lives before coming
to Poland. Genevieve also realized that the place where the children were was a camp and not

a school or a farm as she previously thought. As usual, they had a chat for a while before
Jamzil had to leave, after which they parted ways. To Genevieve’s surprise on arriving home,
she found her newly acquired friend Jamzil cleaning utensils in their kitchen. Being children,
and new friends, Genevieve gave Jamzil a piece of chicken. Soon after, one of Genevieve’s
assistants who had the same type of uniform as her father’s but with fewer decorations
walked in and punished Jamzil for eating in the “master’s” house. The assistant also warned
Genevieve against such behavior. Nonetheless, this did not change their relationship as they
continued to be friends for more than a year.
One evening, Genevieve’s curiosity made her wear the “uniform” worn in the camp
so that they did not have to part ways. Jamzil brought her a set of pyjamas which she wore
and departed for the camp. They crawled under the fence into the camp. The thrill took over
them, and they explored the camp even more. On realizing the tough life led by Jamzil,
Genevieve pledged to stay with Jamzil for the night arguing that her parents would
understand her good act of kindness. No sooner had they started having fun in their newly
discovered “jungle,” than they were given the label “strays” by the soldiers in the camp.
According to the rules and regulations in the camp, the two children, despite their tender age,
had to be captured and sent to another camp as a punishment. Before they knew it, Genevieve
and Jamzil were out in a cage at the back of a truck on their way to another camp miles away.
To them, this was only temporary, and they thought that they would soon be headed back
home once they were done “exploring” this other place.
After several hours of travelling, a tiny brown squirrel crossed the road out of the
blues and distracted the driver. Trying to avoid hitting it, the driver swerves to the left, hits a
rock and losses control over the track. As they wander off the road into the thicket on the side
of the road, the passengers soon discovered that their fate was sealed and that their chances of

survival were dwindling as every second passed. The children were caught in a trance full of
confusion and fear moments before the truck hit a huge tree and began rolling on the hillside.
The truck rolls over several times before hitting a huge rock and coming to an abrupt
stop. Bang! Within a few seconds, the truck that was full of “life” soon became as quiet as a
grave. They were all dead! They were all permanently eliminated from the records of life
along with their hopes and dreams of a better life. Since then, Genevieve was reported
missing as weeks passed without her going home. Her parents thought that she had strayed
looking for Berlin after missing her friends and organized a search party. Their efforts were
unsuccessful. After tracing Genevieve’s steps since her time of disappearance, her parents
soon found out that she was the victim of an accident that took place during a camp-to-camp
transfer as ordered by the management protocols. As Genevieve’s soul watched her parents
discover her death, it could not express itself in better words other than “if only you knew
me.”
