Immigrants- How to give them credit

Immigrants: How to Give the Credit

I have been living in the United States for almost six years, and practically, there is a problem with
the immigrant community. I keep thinking about this topic because we, immigrants come to the
United States to do better; to have a better life, study, have a good job, and we work very hard to
get what we want, we sweat doing that and the end we succeed. Since his election, the president
of the United States talks about immigrants into the United States and how useless they are and
without any form of skill. Despite this, immigrants have an immense impact in this country such
as improving the economy, are skilled as more are involved in building with buildings being set
up in New York is the work of majorly Latino immigrants. This topic directly connects to President
Trump’s reference of Immigrants as animals’ and ‘gang members.’ “You wouldn't believe how
bad these people are. These aren't people. These are animals”(Meraji, Code Switch). For example,
a Mexican immigrant, Salama Hayek came to the United States without documentation, and she
works hard as an actress in Los Angeles and succeeded. This rebuts President’s Trump opinion
that all immigrants are bad and unskilled as we are highly skilled and our only goal is to have a
better life (Meraji, Code Switch). Such remarks by the president have, contributes to the vilification
of immigrant families and those words are not only inhumane but also economically insensitive.
Therefore, this paper, thus, discusses the challenges immigrants pass through in their stay in the
United States and analyses the most effective way they can be recognized for their contribution
towards the development of the nation.

Immigrants are perceived differently across different populations in the United States.
Most people think that immigrants are only from Mexico and the rest Latinos. Those who advocate
for them view them as people trying to survive through taking jobs that everyone else would not
do. In the White House, the administration regards them as criminals, a menace, individuals taking
American jobs and overexploiting resources of the state at the expense of the generosity of the
country. Most of the immigrant population in the United States is comprised of unauthorized
immigrants. Today, there are over 11.5 illegal immigrants in the United States. The Center for
Immigration Studies reports that, due to economic trends and regulations, illegal immigrants have
shifted from the traditional Latino and Mexican to include Indians and Chinese. China for instance,
as opposed to President Trump order for deportation, his wall has not succeeded in locking them
out. China continues to offer younger and highly skilled immigrants to the United States, “Thirty
percent of Chinese immigrants who obtain lawful permanent residence in the United States”
(Immergluck)
Despite the hurdles faced by immigrants, one thing is notable; immigrants have continued
to shape the United States for over 400 years. (Bernstein) opiates that, apart from having been a
critical demographic factor in the naturalization of the population, immigration was an essential
determinant for the economic, social and political processes of the country. Migration into the
United States has seemed to coincide with various fundamental transformations in the nation’s
economy. European immigrants led to the development of European settlements and allowed its
transition from a colony to an agricultural economy. The industrial revolution also contributed to
the rise of the United States as a global industrial power. In the modern day, immigration coincides
with issues of globalization and its transformation into a knowledge-based economy. Primarily,
SURNAME:3
therefore, immigration across the different periods seems to be motivated by economic change and
helping the United States to attain new levels of economic, social and political development.
The policies on immigrants in the nations take years to be enacted and on rare occasions. This is
because any policy reform towards immigrants impacts both social and economic ties that drive
immigration in the first place. But today, the United States is on the threshold of overly new
immigration legislation that is seeking to address longstanding issues of immigrants and
immigration. The need for better legislation today is probably spurred by the 9/11 immigration
policy. The problem of international security threat continues to inform decisions on immigration.
Demby in Meraji’s Code Switch says that, “Nonetheless, the brand new Department of Homeland
Security aimed to, quote, "remove all removable aliens from the U.S." and requested the resources
to do so. And it meant that an ever-expanding list of offenses and civil violations.”
The number of immigrants in the United States exceeds 13 percent of the population with
over 42 million immigrants, and the numbers keep increasing. Foreign-born populations in the
United States is concentrated based on the proximity of states or modern states. For example,
California is advantageously proximate to Mexico and New York remains a preferred metropolitan
destination. Settlements into the United States are further encouraged by employment
opportunities in agricultural, food processing and construction sectors. The other critical factor
that immigrants seem to be aware forehand is the lowering cost of living and depopulation of
specific regions as a result of aging or internal migration. For instance, as a result of this, Nevada
and Georgia have become key destination sites.
Hainmuller and Daniel describe how immigration into the United States is made possible
through family reunification, satisfying labor market needs or through refugee status or asylum
seekers. Most common ways to immigrating are through family-based connections or
SURNAME:4
employment-based channels, “Although most Chinese immigrants in the United States are legally
present, approximately 268,000 of them were unauthorized in 2014 because they were through
family assistance.” (Hainmuller and Daniel). The United States remains a crucial refugee country
and provides for protection to victims of political, religious or ethnic violence. Immigration is also
possible through the status of temporary visitors who come to the United States as tourists or for
study and diplomats. Through these, the number of immigrants has increased as a result of the
legislation that anyone born in the United States becomes a U.S. citizen. These individuals become
entitled to extended rights not accorded to non-citizens. Further, immigrants who have lived in
the country for over five years are given permanent residence. The other group of immigrants is
unauthorized immigrants who enter using fraud. Since 1970, numbers of illegal immigrants have
been peaking every year.
All these groups of immigrants have led to a policy problem over the years they have stayed
in the states. Though the number has been drawn by the rapid job opportunities, they have in turn
rapidly led to an increase in numbers of job opportunities Immigrants own 10.8 percent of all
firms with employees providing job opportunities for thousands of Americans” (SEC). By
providing cheaper labor compared to the U.S. citizens, they have been viewed as contributing to
substantial economic growth. They are also highly skilled in different areas, and they offer their
expertise at a cheaper rate. Their contributions to the growth of the United States economy often
overshadows the social changes and pressure on public services they bring about. This makes the
issue of immigration to be a national issue of concern from different perspectives.
First immigrants are business owners who have founded or helped in founding and funding
businesses. The examples of Google, eBay, Sun Microsystems have immigrant roots. This can be
seen in the New American Fortune 500 report that says that, “Fortune 500 companies founded by
SURNAME:5
immigrants are not confined to a small subset of industries or fields” They own businesses in a
variety of industries and make substantial contributions I both high skilled and low-skilled labor
markets. Secondly, immigrants are job creators, with industries created by immigrant employee
close to 5 million people in the United States. The small business also generates more the $800
billion in revenue annually. Immigrants are also actively involved in increasing the nation’s
capacity to develop new ideas. Foreign-born investors in the U.S. have been found to contribute
to over 73 percent of patents issued to top ten patent-producing universities the Fortune 500
companies generated revenues equivalent to 73 percent of GDP. These companies now form the
global economy’s center of gravity, and our future prosperity is entwined with theirs.. (The “New
American” Fortune 500”. The fourth contribution to policy problem for the immigrants is that
immigrants contribute to American competitiveness. Technology-intense and service industries
that require an advanced degree or Ph.D. have been recruiting immigrants especially of Africa and
Arabic origin as they are more like to meet those requirements. From this, it is evident that
immigrants further employment, productivity, and income; essential elements in the U.S.
economy. They have high business formation rates, hire employees and increase international
export hence becoming engines for capital formation in the United States.
From the discussion on the contribution of immigrants in the United States, it is evident
that they need to be credited for their role in supporting the nation’s economy. In my opinion, the
most effective way of giving credit to immigrants for their role in the economic stability of
the United States would be improving access to capital. This is because owing to their
contribution to the country economy. It is of great importance to ensure that the access to capital
for the immigrants and other small business owners is ratified for the purpose if their growth and
for their businesses, job creation and increase in production. The immigrants may have amassed
SURNAME:6
saving from their hardworking for business start-ups, but external capital is essential for
strengthening their small or medium-size businesses. Immergluck lauds the need for outside
investment sources is essential for the immigrants as they tend to have lower personal wealth than
the mainstream United States citizens. On the other hand, successful entrepreneurs begin by taking
loans or relying on vendor financing or credit lines. The small businesses also seek outside equity
investments for early-stage capital and are essential units for economic growth New American
Fortune 500 report suggests that “This next generation is even better able to capitalize on
opportunities in America.”
Small businesses can face many challenges in finding external financial support. For
instance, financial crisis and its aftermath still impact on credit availability with small business
increasingly finding difficulty in accessing funds. It is indicated that more than 43 percent of small
entrepreneurs find it difficult to obtain credit and the dire needed financial aid. Moreover,
entrepreneurs of color and women find it even more difficult to obtain credit. The SEC points that,
“Hispanic immigrants make up 28 percent of small business owners nationally.”
Therefore, it is of great importance to consider the ways small businesses which are owned
by immigrants, access capital markets. United States Security and Exchange Commission (SEC)
therefore can help in stabilizing further the economy by strengthening immigrant economic base.
SEC among other responsibilities is involved in the establishment of disclosures required to be
made public by companies and for ensuring that investors receive the necessary information
needed for prudent investment. The commission is also to foster its investment law enforcement
to prevent business fraud and misconduct. Through its operation, the SEC will protect the
businesses of immigrants thus strengthening their economic generation activities for their survival
and thus contributing further to the economy of the state. On another part, SEC is involved on
SURNAME:7
facilitation of capital formation. Its involvement will ensure that businesses and companies owned
by immigrants are protected and thus their capacity to develop new products and services that grow
the ability of not only the immigrants but the entire U.S. population to earn a living (Center for
Immigration studies).
Bernstein, Shai, et al says that mplementation of proper capital raising mechanism will
protect the investments of immigrants and they will surely be repaid for the field of play will be
fair and level. The immigrants will confidently be taken on the markets as there will be less
expensive ways of raising capital. Poor regulation of the capital market will impair capital
formation, reduces job opportunities and entrepreneurial activities become limited. Such harm can
be devastating to the stay of immigrants, but it is the state that will be the ultimate loser.
All this leads us to the conclusion that immigrant’s potentiality to growing the United
States economy is enormous. Immigrants will continue playing critical roles in the nation as it
sails through considerable challenges. Immigrants will be the teachers, doctors, lawyers,
engineers, entrepreneurs as well as elected political leaders. Their position in America and their
numbers will continue influencing the course of the nation. The future of immigrant has become
vivid and clear. In the future, therefore, there will be critical policy reforms that will empower
immigrants from the shadows and they will step-up their contributions to the state. This is because
emancipating the human capital will prosper the nation to new levels. This is achievable by
according the immigrants, who have come to take the country as their home, the right to fulfill
their dreams freely. Opening up credit access for immigrants is, therefore, key to the taking of the
nation to overly new levels. The United States is made great by her willingness to open to a new
generation of immigrants and the pooling of diversity in the country. The government should,
therefore, formulate policies that maximize on its population talents and skills in disregard to their
SURNAME:8
race, color, ethnicity or religion to spur the nation to greatness. As the country continues to draw
people for its promise of freedom and prosperity, there is a need to look back into the contributions
of the newcomers in the prosperity of America. After this, we will all be able to see how these
people help in supporting and strengthening our businesses, communities and the country.
