IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON HEALTHCARE
SERVICES 2

The use of technology in various sectors is profound. Technology has been widely
embraced and integrated into everyday lives. This is not limited to professional lives but personal
lives of individuals, as well. The health sector is one of the key areas that have been influenced
by the use of technology. As a result, it has had immense implications.
Technology has had a positive contribution to the performance of the employees in the
health sector (Carlos, Mahmoud &Youseff, 2010). Firstly, conducting of research by doctors and
scientists has been made easier. It is the responsibility of the experts in the medical field to
invent solutions for ailments and different health problems. Technology, through the internet has
made it easier for medical practitioners to access past research that had been conducted. This
helps them to use it in their present work thereby finding solutions easily. Additionally, other
personnel like nurses are able to access vital information such as prescription of doses in cases
where they were unaware. Technology has also helped in documentation of health data. Patients’
records are bulky and take up plenty of space when stored manually. Technology has enabled
compression of the information without loss. This not only makes the work of employees easier,
but also enhances security on patient files making them avoid lawsuits (Courtney, Shabestari &
Kuo, 2013). However, there is a disadvantage of technology on the performance of employees.
Occurrence of machine downtime affects the workflow of employees leading to time wastage.
Time is essential in the health sector. As a result, wastage is considered hazardous.
Technology has affected the organizational structure of the health sector (Cowing, Carrie,
Ramaya&Szmerekovsky, 2010). Communication among healthcare personnel has been
enhanced. It has become easy to notify doctors of emergencies increasing chances of saving
lives. Moreover, the health sector is able to reach patients through platforms such as the social
media.
