Causes and Justifications.
A close look reveals that imperialism was caused and justified by a list of factors,
chief among them, social dwarfism. Here, weak states would be exploited by stronger states
hence echoing the concept of survival for the fittest. Secondly, imperialism was also
encouraged by religion especially when missionaries set out to spread Christianity. In other
words, this was referred to as imperialism of righteousness. Also, colonialist governments
sought to maximize profits by trading, accessing cheap labor and furthering production in
their colonies. To do this the colonialists justified the motives by arguing that it was in their
interests to uplift “backward nations from their states of despair. Finally, imperialism was
used as a safety valve because it prevented social protests within the American population.
Indeed, for men and women stuck in boring industrial jobs saw imperialism as an escape
from the strict morality and protocol of Victorian life.
Effects on Imperialists and Colonies.
Imperialism caused both positive and negative effects to the colonies. To begin with,
the colonies enjoyed more developed facilities such as roads and railways. Moreover, the
colonies received other benefits like schools and hospitals so that their culture was
modernized. Extending this observations, the colonies gained the abilities of self-governance
and sustenance even after the exit of the colonizers. On the negative side, the effects of
colonialism are equally visible. For instance, the colonies were exploited especially because
they were a source of cheap labor. Furthermore, it is reported that the imperialists came with
nothing to offer and grabbed the land from the colonialist. Even more, there are instances
where the colonialists were attacked, killed or evicted from their place of residence. At the
same time, the culture of the victims was oppressed while their rights were denied in almost
all occasions.

Effects on America and the Globe.
On the side of America, the effects were visibly positive especially at the economic
level. For instance, by 1890, the United States enjoyed a more industrial output than any
other nation. Indeed, about 25% of the county’s agricultural products were sold overseas.
Equally, America enjoyed additional industrial revolution fueled by the anticipation for
growth in international markets.
Proceeding to the entire globe, imperialism promoted international trade and
consequently, the stabilization of the global economy. This fact was especially possible
because as counties extended their presence to colonies, new discoveries were made. Indeed,
countries that were defiant to imperialism which would later extend to integration performed
poorly. At some point in history, Americans engaged in Isolationism which was the practice
of a nation segregating itself from foreign policies and concentrating on self-building. This
practice was fuelled by two factors- the manifest destiny and George Washington’s Farewell
Address.
To add, ideas were exchanged and counties interacted so that inter-country trade
became easy. Moreover, imperialism enhanced the idea of governance and the stability of
nations was encouraged. Precisely, when colonialists invaded oversea countries, most of them
introduced the rule of law. Overtime, the use of laws was adopted and even after the exit of
the imperialists, the application of the rule of law continued. Moreover, imperialism
introduced ideas that are still exploited today. An example of that idea is the African-
American culture and the respect of the rights of the blacks.
Position.
To summarize, there is evidence that despite a few disadvantages caused by the
imperialists, the outcomes were mostly positive both to the colonies and the colonialists.
Starting with the few adverse effects, colonialists lost their land, were physically injured and
sometimes even killed. However, the invasion presented a list of benefits. For instance, the
colonies enjoyed infrastructural developments, for instance roads and bridges. Furthermore,
even though the colonies may argue that they lost their land, most of it was initial idle until
the imperialists utilized it. According to the lecture notes, colonies are reported of having
provided raw materials that fueled industrial revolution.

To add, the colonies gained meaningful skills from the industries. Finally, the
colonies were enlightened on important subjects like self-governance that continue to benefit
societies to date. On the side of imperialists, the outcome was equally beneficial. To start
with, market accessibility increased and indeed, the notes argue that America was able to sell
over 25% of its agricultural produce to other nations. Moreover, the level of interactions and
exchange of ideas increased so that nations Japan and the Asian region were almost
surpassing America in performance. To catch up, the latter was compelled to accept the idea
of integration at the expense of isolatism. Pointedly, America is reported of developing to an
expansive of urban society following an influx of foreigners. To confirm this claim even
further, the notes provide that until 1890, the United States was still behind Europe and
Japan. To catch up in terms of military and politics, it had to engage in imperialism between
the years 1865 and 1890.
