Intellectual standards.
Fairness is one of the intellectual standards that I have lived to cherish in my entire life.
Fairness as an intellectual standard can be defined as a principle that ensures a person makes his
considerations with all due considerations on the effects of the decisions he makes on other
people. Fairness would also be taken to broadly mean acting without taking sides due to the
influences posed by other people. I choose this principle because one of the principles that can
help organizations and the entire world in winning the war against corruption. For instance, if
fairness is applied when a person is taken to court, criminals will receive the due punishments for
their crimes. Fairness shall not give a chance to deception in form of bribe or fake witnessing

The workplace is one of the places in which a person would spend most of his time.
Moreover, in other cases, employees are required to make most of the decisions in the company.
I have been in many scenarios that have required me to make tough decisions based on fairness.
In some cases, the benefits that might have accrued from a decision I was influenced to make by
my bosses seemed wonderful. However, I came to think of the long-term effects that might have
been detrimental not only to the organization but also my style of thinking. For instance, by
applying fairness in my decisions, I would think on the repercussions that embezzlement of
funds would have on the organization other than fixing my mind on the personal gains. I mean if
I accept a bribe once, it would hard for me to reject it the next time I am approached to do the
same.
School life consumed more of my time as I have been growing up. Fairness in school has
a broad diversity of application than I ever thought. Actually, it is while at school that I managed
to nurture the fairness virtue in my style of thinking. In school, I am expected to compete against

other students in order to emerge the best. By considering competition, it is possible to indulge in
unscrupulous practices such cheating in exams or copying assignments in order to have good
grades or beat timelines respectively. By considering fairness, my perception of things changed. I
realized that by striving to complete my assignments, I was cultivating the virtue of hard work in
me. In addition to this that by pursuing my course diligently in order to stop cheating in exams I
was basically increasing my scope of knowledge.
Life presents a wide scope of challenges on a daily basis that ought to be addressed in a
wise manner. The decisions on what to wear, what to eat, what to do and how to behave are
basically determined by our own way of thinking. My decisions on day-to-day life practices can
also be determined by the influence I get from my friends. However, there are other decisions in
life that I have learned to make based on the fairness principle as per the intellectual standards.
For instance, it might seem irrelevant to place a candy wrapping in my pocket and drop it in a
dustbin. Fairness tells me that if I drop that wrapping carelessly, I am contributing to
environmental degradation that will adversely affect the future generation.
Conclusion
For me to improve on thinking fairly, I consider involving my friends in short discussions while
hanging out with them to make them realize the relevance of fairness in the society today. Being
fair individually may be good but may not be adequate in saving the world. By engaging on this
matter, I suppose I will have a different and a more advanced perception as regards fairness.
Similarly, having an advanced perception may not help much. I intend to put into practice the
positive practices that I will gain and discard the negative ones. By this, I suppose I will have a
broader view of how the other people perceive fairness and devise a way of influencing the to
think fairly.
