How does the society influence intercultural relationships?
The society plays an important role in the intercultural relationship. People have gone
beyond their ethnic borders to look for a spouse and intermarry. For example, approximately 61
percentage of American Indian female and a slightly lower percentage of male find it wise to
marry from outside their ethnic groups. Love is the main contributor to marriage outside ethnic
groups but society will have a different perspective from the ones in love. The society may see
them unequal since their altitude and stereotype differs (Martin & Nakayama, 2013 p. 280).
This depends on who marries who. For example, the probability of a black man marrying from
outside is higher than that of women getting married from outside while in Asia, the number
women married from outside is much higher than that of men.
This data can create frustrations among African America women and Asian American
Men. The main result of this statistics is to reflect how society, media, and individuals contribute
to a negative image of both groups. In Hollywood movies, this negative image is strengthened
regularly by pairing Asian women with Anglo men other than Asian men. There is always a
feeling of superiority when married to a person who understands his language and culture well
than you do. This makes the one understanding to be in control of almost everything in the
relationship and makes the other look desperate. This can lead to break up when spouse from
different groups understands the same language perfectly and they become equal in control of
their relationship.
It is very important to consider the intercultural relationship in the society due to societal
pressure and interracial couples. It is also significant for society to recognize other ethnic and
racial groups since they might feel as if they are in a relationship with their enemies if they

portray a negative image of other groups (Martin & Nakayama, 2013 p. 282). Religious and
educational institutions are in a good position to improve attitude about interracial marriages in
the society.
What are the issues involved in intercultural dating and marriage?
Intercultural dating involves the romantic relationship between people from different
ethnic group and race. People marry either outside their ethnic or racial group by physically or
sexually attraction. According to a survey that was conducted among young generation aged 19
to 29 year, said that the romantic link between people of different races brings a change for a
better and prosperous society. Men are in a good position than women to date interculturally
since they have more power in choosing a romantic partner.
People are likely to date from outside their culture if they relate to different cultures may
be in churches, schools or even at their workplaces. That diversity of friendship network
influences intercultural relationship most. Friends can contribute to a potential romantic partner
and with their approval, it aids in sustaining the intercultural relationship (Martin & Nakayama,
2013 p. 273). Parents are also contributors in whether their children date interculturally (Martin
& Nakayama, 2013 p. 274). Dating interculturally depends on one's friends, altitude and the
behaviors of one's parents.
Intercultural marriages
In the past 20 years, the rate at which intercultural marriages are conducted is intensively
high. The scholars refer to this as "love revolution". However, there is opposition in intercultural
marriages among some Jewish, Christians and Muslim parents refusing their children to marry

outside their faith. In intercultural marriages, religions play a major role (Martin & Nakayama,
2013 p. 274).
Pressure from families and society are the major concern in an intercultural marriage.
Raising children among those in intercultural marriage is also a major concern since they face
high probability in disagreeing how to raise them (Martin & Nakayama, 2013 p. 275). They are
also likely to face opposition and resistance from families about their marriage life.
