INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES AND PRIVACY 2
I think it is not the time to give up due to the Google and Privacy. We are required to
fight for our rights of privacy. We are required to demand privacy protection from both software
and hardware developers because if we do not fight for our privacy rights, other corporations and
governments are struggling to get our privacy information for surveillance. Also, the
corporations are using our privacy information for the business purpose. According to Jeschke,
"We should not have to give up the cool new tools of the future to protect our privacy" (Weeks,
2012). I agree with Jeschke because if we give up, it would be an awful mistake that will lead to
sharing of our privacy data.
Even though many people do not care about the digital privacy, I think there are many
reasons I should care about digital privacy. Many companies such as Google and Facebook are
not only selling our private information to the highest bidder but also sharing the information
with the government. We all agree to the terms and conditions of different Websites without
knowing that our information is being shared. For example, Gary LosHuertos did an experiment
to know if our privacy is being accessed by third parties. He went to the New York City café that
was installed with WiFi. Within minutes, Gary managed to investigate many Facebooks
accounts. He used his Facebook account to send warning messages to other Facebook accounts.
When he told the customers in the café that he had hacked into their accounts, no one bothered,
and they continued surfing. Gary expected anger responses from the customers, but no one
responded. Gary says, "Really wasn't kidding about the insecurity thing," he says. "I won't send
another message after this — it's up to you to take your security seriously” (Sullivan, 2011).
This means that many people do not care if their privacy information is accessed.
