(An interview which I interviewed Emilio Castellano, the manager of Ciboney Restaurant. The
interview was meant to improve my understanding of the four main management functions
which is of great importance in my business profession)
Me: Good morning madam manager
Manager: Good morning too
Me: It’s a great honor to have an opportunity to talk with you. I’m a business student and would
like to ask you some questions about the management of your restaurant. The information
I’ll get from your responses will be of great importance to me as a business student as it
will help to improve my knowledge about management which is a major area in the
business profession.
Manager: Okay, no problem. Feel free to ask any question.
Me: Thank you, madam. To start with planning, I would like to know how are you planning to
reach your goal?
Manager: Okay, as you know, every organization has some goals it wishes to meet, which could
be either short-term goals or long-term goals or both. The same case applies to
our restaurant where we have some goals we would like to meet. For us to meet
the goals we have come up with a well-written plan which shows all the steps to
follow and all the activities which should be done by all the stakeholders of our
organization, and I believe by following all the steps and all the stakeholders
doing what’s expected of them, we’ll be able to meet our goals.
Me: Okay, thanks for the information, and how do you train your workers to reach
your goal?
Manager: Okay, training of the workers to reach our goals is very simple. As already said, we
have a well-written plan which we are committed to follow for us to meet our
goals. So, we always share with all the employees the plan and explain and teach
them all what they are supposed to do for us to meet our goals. When we realize
any worker is not willing to follow the given instructions and guidelines, we are
always forced to replace him/her with another worker who will be ready to follow
all the given guidelines. We are very serious when it comes to matters of our
goals and we are ready to do anything possible to achieve them.
Me: Okay, and Do you have a standing plan or a single use plan?
Manager: Okay, currently we have that major written standing plan which we follow to realize
our goals, but we do make other minor plans in our operations to help us meet
some minor objectives or goals within our operational processes.
Me: Okay, thanks for the information about your plans and all the best. I would like to know
more about the organization of your restaurant. What are normally your requisites at the
moment of hiring?
Manager: Okay, as a high-quality, well-known restaurant, we hire professionals who are
qualified in their areas of applications. Apart from academic qualifications, we
also consider some personal attributes such as personal commitment, personal
cleanliness, courtesy, among other attributes. As a restaurant, we must hire the
workers who are qualified in many aspects of life, not only in academics, for them
to deliver the best services to our customers.
Me: Alright, then, how do you organize your team and is your team diverse?
Manager: I have a very diverse team with very many people from different genders, different
ethnicities, different religions, and many other differences. Therefore, organizing
them is really challenging, but I always try to organize them according to their
qualifications, experience, and their interests, and this organization has proved to
be effective as the teams I organize deliver good results.
Me: Okay, thanks for that. I would like to know more about your influence as the manager. Do
you usually support your teams and how do you support them?
Manager: Alright, one of the major roles of the managers is to support their teams or workers for
them to deliver the best. The same case applies to me here where I support my
teams in different ways to make sure they are always happy and ready to work to
deliver the best. One of the major support I give to my teams is making sure they
always get their salaries (wages) in time without any delay. I always pay them
good salaries and on top of the good salaries, I always make sure I give them
numerous bonuses to motivate them. I always make sure I offer the best working
conditions where the team members get some extra free days on request whenever
they have some personal issues to address. There are many other ways I use to
support my teams to make sure they are happy at work, and working happily, they
really deliver their best which helps the restaurant to prosper.
Me: Alright. In your own views, is your plan working to reach your goals?
Manager: Oh yeah, our plan is really working to reach our goals and has helped us to make some
steps forward. We are quite ahead of where we started.
Me: In controlling your big team, how do you go about it?
Manager: Okay, as I already told you, I have a very big number of workers who I have arranged
in different teams according to their qualifications, experience, and their interests.
For effective control of the teams, I have appointed some team leaders who lead
all these teams and these leaders help me to control the big number of workers in
the restaurant.
Me: Alright, then on stress, How do you and you and your team handle the stress?
Manager: Okay, having a very big number of people working in this restaurant, stress has been a
major challenge affecting many people. However, as the manager, I have always
tried to offer the most favorable working conditions to make sure the workers
won’t suffer from so much stress at work. I also, once in a while, invite some
counselors to come and talk to the workers about some issues affecting them
which may stress them in their lives. These counselors advise the workers how
they can handle some of the stress they face in their lives. I’m also always there to
listen to the complaints of the workers and offer the necessary solutions to make
sure the workers work in a stress-free environment.
Me: Okay, thank you for your responses madam. I’m really grateful for you willingness to
respond to my questions. The information you have shared is really helpful in my
business profession.
