INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SKILLS (Task Two)
Introduction
Technology is essential in many aspects of life. It helps fasten the rate at which work is
done and helps save on cost by reducing the number of employees needed to work on a project
(Brookshear, 2011, 81). Since with the use of technology activities are performed faster than usual,
a company can therefore use it to increase the volume of products produced hence increasing the
company’s productivity and profit margins. Technology can also be used to pass critical
information from a manager to the other staff thus enhancing business management. Furthermore,
technological tools are essential in academics since they are used for research and for passing
information from the tutor to the students. Technology should therefore be embraced in businesses,
organizations and institutions since it is very essential in increasing productivity, enhancing
management and research work

Based on excel output, the time I spend one different modules vary. I spend more time in

have to spend more time. I spend a total of 48 hours for the 10 weeks on that module. Other
than module 2, I spend more time on module 1 and the least time in module 4. Also based on
the output, the time I spend for independent studies increases as the time for the final exams
approaches. This is because I want to be adequately ready for the exams for me to perform
well. On average I spend more time studying in week 8, 9 and 10, which are the week’s
closers to the final exams. General, I put good efforts in my independent studies expect for
week 1, 3 and 7. During this weeks the content we have studied in class is relatively small.
Microsoft Office in Education
Microsoft office is essential for learning purposes. Microsoft has a number of
applications that are commonly used by students and tutors to enhance studies. The commonly
used applications include Microsoft word, Microsoft excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
MS Word
Microsoft word (MS Word) is mostly used by students when typing their assignments or
notes (Grauer et al, 2013, 125). The application enable the students present their work in a
neat and attractive manner that can read by all. Unlike handwritten assignments whose
appearance and readability depends on the writers handwriting, MS Word has font types that a
user can select from and most of them are visible and readable. Some of the features that make
MS Word of great important to students include the tables and graphical objects features
(Grauer et al, 2013, 168). The tables features enables the students to create tables, modify
them and format them accordingly while the graphical objects features enables them to insert
objects such as picture, object drawn and images into the word document. This two features
enhance the attractiveness and organization of the assignment.
Introduction to Computer Skill 7
MS Excel
The Microsoft excel is equally important since it enables the students to solve most of the
statistical and mathematical assignments. The MS Excel has inbuilt formulas that can be used
by the students to solve a wide range of mathematical questions. Furthermore, excel allows
the students to copy paste the formula thus enabling the students to solve the mathematical
questions in the shortest time possible (Walken, 2010, 32). The two features that are
commonly used by students in their assignment are the Excel formulas and the Excel Charts.
The excel formulas are used to solve a wide range of problems in the shortest time possible.
So long as the students understands how to use the formula he or she can be able to get all the
correct questions within the shortest time possible. On the other hand, the excel charts are
used to represent the data in a way that it can easily analyzed (Walken, 2010, 34). The
commonly used excel charts include bar chart, pie chart, column chart, and line chart.
MS PowerPoint
The Microsoft PowerPoint commonly known as MS PowerPoint is used by tutors during
lecture sessions and with the students giving out presentation of their projects, research and
group work assignment. MS PowerPoint has basic features that make the presentations neat
and attractive. For instance, the built-in layouts and slides makes the work of the students
easily since they don’t have to design a layout on their own but they just choose a layout that
appeals to them most (Walken, 2010, 45). In so doing the students and tutors are able to save
on time taken to format and edit the slides. The chart and table features also enables the
students to add charts and tables that make the details in the presentation easy to understand.
Technological Advancement in Oil and Gas Industry
Technology is a key element in the improving the productivity in the Oil and Gas
Industry. Although the industry was initial slow in adopting technological advanced tools and

software in the past, the industry now embraces technology. In the past few years when the
companies in this industry used the technological tools, they have witnessed an increase in
profit and this has motivated them to innovate new technological tools. The commonly used
hardware include the drilling machines and the robots while the commonly used software are
the cloud commuting and GIS Packages.
Hardware
Drilling Tools
The drilling tools have enabled the employees to dig dip and reach the oil basins which
could not be reached easily. The drilling machine enables the companies to reach the oil
reserves quickly and enables them to easily collect the oil that will be processed and sold to
consumers.
Robots
The robots or robotics on the other hand, are used to connect the drill pipes that pass
through ocean water to reach the oil-bearing rocks. This robots help do such a task that is
considered dangerous for any human being. The robots are quite fast thus enabling the
companies to increase their productivity.
Software
Cloud Computing
The cloud computing allows the oil and gas companies to store, manage and process the
large amount of data they get. This data are kept safe in the clouds and they can be assessed
anytime if need be and they can also be shared with other companies in future. Since the cloud
computing ensures that no data is lost, the oil and gas industry can use the funds they used to
collect with data once is lost to increase their productivity level.
Introduction to Computer Skill 9
GIS Package
Finally, the GIS Package such as the Player enables the oil and gas companies to explore
the basins where the oil and gas could be located. It enables the employees to identify the
right prospect that should be taken, the right play and the right basic in which the drillers need
to drill. With this information, the employees can save on the time wasted in drilling the
wrong basins thus maximizing on time.
Limitations of Technological Advancement in Oil and Gas Industry
Although this technological tools increase productivity, they have some limitations. For
instance, the drilling machine can break if the rock bearing oil is hard thus delaying the
drilling process. The robots on the other hand, replaces a large number of employees in the
industry thus rending them jobless. This is one of the factors that made the oil and gas
industry delay in adopting this technology. The cloud computing may not be a 100 percent
effective since malware viruses may attack the data thus leading to the loss of the data. Also,
the company may not have control over what the users do with the data and in case of harmful
users they may edit or even delete the information from the cloud. Although the GIS packages
are goods, they require high skills to operate which all employees in the industry may not be
having.
Conclusion
In summary, technology is very important in business management, in education and in
the oil and gas industry. Technology makes learning simple and easier for students.
Technological tools can be used to do research and projects. The different applications of
Microsoft office are used by students to write assignment, solve mathematical problems, and
appear presentations (Reed, 2008, 335). The applications have features that students and tutors
used to improve preventability of their work thus making them more attractive and appealing.
Introduction to Computer Skill 10
Technology is also used in the Oil and Gas industry to increase productivity and to reduce the
time taken to obtain oil and natural gases. The GIS packages are used to explore basins with
oil while the drilling tools are used to dig the ground to reach where the oil and natural gas
are. The robots on the other hand are used to connect the drilling tools through the ocean
waters to the oil-bearing rock, a process that is too risky to be undertaken by man. The cloud
computing is then used to save the data collected in a save location. Although technology is
good it has its own limitations. The oil and gas technological tools for instance, cause most
people loss jobs. The drilling machine can breaks anytime it gets in contact with a hard rock
while the GIS packages cannot be operated with any person without skills.
