Is having a Higher Degree Important in life?
Although a higher degree is emphasized in many cases, many people in the world are
illiterate without any academic papers, but they live a good life. The role of education in any
type of success has been repeatedly determined to be relative. As such, equating a higher degree
to any form of life achievement is inaccurate. Again, one would argue that there are traditional
ways of education that contributed far much more to individual and society wellbeing than a
higher degree. Since we all have our version of a good life, which I define as a state where a
person is content with their quality of life, I strongly believe that higher education is not a crucial
requirement in life to be forced upon an individual.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many youths with higher degrees but are still
unemployed? Higher education does not guarantee you a position in an organization. Joblessness
has resulted in intellectual people to seek alternative works or even become entrepreneurs and
life goes on. An excellent example of individuals who started their own company and became
successful without any college qualification is Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. In
both these cases, the individuals have pioneered changes that have practically change the world
simply from passion. While some basic college education can be credited for the excellence of
their ideas, none of them found any value in either completing their college or pursuing a higher
degree which has often been blamed for indoctrinating the “employee mindset” into people

before condemning them into perpetual job seeking as opposed to encouraging innovativeness
and entrepreneurship.
The comparison between the higher education and college are not the same. As such,
colleges in most instances are worth your time than a higher degree because of the fact they are
cheap, and they instill the same skills as those in higher levels (Boles 4). At the same time, there
are better ways to build on the skills and knowledge acquired at lower levels than academic
qualification. For instance, on-the-job experience is much greater than any training. Employers
incline more towards experience than an educational qualification in the awareness that the
restricted academic environment can never provide the learner with an actual feel of the
dynamics of a job. Looking at the actual structure and content of higher degree education, the
bias is towards a technical understanding of specific industries which can be achieved better
through experience. In the same way, academic excellence does not translate to professional
brilliance; a higher degree does not offer the learner any significant advantage in life outside the
educational dimension. You can choose other options apart from higher education that can lead
to a better life and results.
The proponents of higher education see it as an effective tool for activating advanced
levels of thinking and hence superior problem-solving skills. This view is the cause why
universities are taught by professors and not bachelor’s holders. The assumption is doctoral
education equips one with skills and a critical worldview that cannot be matched through any
other form of knowledge acquisition. At the same time, while there may be a handful of brilliant
individuals that have excelled without college or higher education, there are millions more who
have found fulfillment and a good life through platforms created by higher education. For
instance, those that wish to teach in a university, practice advanced medicine, lead multinational

organizations, or gain unequivocal experts in particular fields all need higher degrees to reach
this place. This perspective does not suffice particularly in a world where education has been
placed on a higher pedestal than other forms of knowledge gathering. In actual sense, education,
even at advanced levels only provides an introduction to problems and leaves the rest to be
encountered and tackled through experience.
In conclusion, I have seen many people without a higher degree, and they are living a
good and prosperous life. Allowing education to define a human is one-dimensional and
significantly limits the ability to perform in other areas of life. Again, there are alternative and
more effective ways to create and gain knowledge outside the academic setting. Industry leaders
and pioneers that have revolutionized the world have in many cases achieved this through
experience and passion. A higher degree must then not be seen as a means to an end unless
where that end is employment. Even then, the effectiveness of education has been challenged by
educated individuals who lack the practical competence to perform at high levels. All these
factors do not consider the prohibitive cost of a higher degree. In my opinion, a higher degree is
a tool, and although it is highly recommended in the modern world, it is not a necessity for life.
