Analysis
There were more men than women in all the categories. However, where there were women, men
tended to present hard news like the collapse of the bridge while the women tended to present the
news that were somewhat soft and political news. The whites were majorly the anchors and
weather casters while minorities tended to be sports reporters and field reporters. More men than
women and more whites than minorities reported during both newscasts. Given that the population
of the area is 70.1% white, 22.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.02%
Pacific Islander, 1.2% other races and 2.2% from two or more races. 6.2% of the population are
Latino or Hispanic of any race; our group believes that the representation of the people from
different races in News Reporting and Anchoring does not take into account the people of all the
races present in this area. The ration of men to women in Michigan is 97:100. Therefore, gender
is also not well represented in the news.
