Lars and the Real Girl
Lars and the Real Girl is a 2007 American movie directed by Craig Gillespie, written
by Nancy Oliver, and co-produced by Sarah Aubrey, John Cameron, and Sidney Kimmel.
The allegory-style movie stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner,
and Patricia Clarkson. The plot of the movie revolves around Lars, a man in his late twenties
who experiences a rather boring life due to his shy nature, as well as a normal life
characterized by an office job and weekly church services. The death of his mother at a
young age had a huge impact on Lars’ life because he had to put up with the trauma of living
with a depressed, emotionally unavailable, and abusive father. Lars’ life becomes further
complicated following the death of his father and the bother of his brother who moves to the
family house. This makes him more withdrawn and shows little need for human contact. Lars
slowly develops a psychological problem that makes him very delusional to the extent of
seeking to find love in vinyl love dolls from the internet despite having a secret admirer in
one of his female co-workers. The damage to Lars’ life is due to the effect of not feeling
loved and the lack of a physical touch throughout his life. This affects his ability to build
relationships and connect romantically with a real girl. The producer does a commendable job
for the manner in which he explores the concepts of love, idealism, and realism throughout
the movie. The movie applies as very sweet and soulfully executed plot that explores the
concept of true love and the reality of manhood very effectively.
The producer uses a number of literary techniques throughout the movie in a bid to
connect effectively with the audience. One of the widely used literary techniques in the

movie is metaphors. The producer uses figures of speech in which an expression applies to
refer to something that it does not literally denote to suggest a similarity. For example, the
scenes in which Lars buys a plastic woman from the internet and proudly introduces her to
his family helps to denote similar real life situations where certain people cannot establish
romantic connections with real people, and often react awkwardly to physical touch because
they are not used to it. Another literal technique used in the movie is idealism. Lars comes
across as a person obsessed with the need for self-assurance, thus the reason he strives to
create an idealistic love by getting Bianca. He believes that Bianca deserves his selfless love
and full commitment because she is not in a position to do the same to him. He often fails in
his commitment to her because she slowly becomes famous and occupied with various things
that make him jealous and angry. However, Lars realizes later on that Bianca has her own life
and cannot love her perfectly because of his human nature. This scenario helps to introduce
realism, which is another literally technique applied in the movie. The realizations that Lars
makes about his human nature helps to transform him and realize the impracticability of his
idealistic thoughts. He slowly comes in touch with the facts of life, such as the possibility of
finding true love with a real human being and the reality that one cannot love perfectly. This
plays a crucial role in Lars’ ability to drop all the delusions he had and accept himself, as a
man who got needs just like everyone else.
