Leadership theories
Working in the field of healthcare presents a lot of challenges to just any nurse regardless
of experience in the field. My experience in the field was very instrumental in shaping my
leadership skills. Due to my professional, social and cultural background, I was able to apply my
vast leadership skills unbridled.
Soon after I had started working with other nurses, I did couldn’t help noticing that it is
imperative for any healthcare professional to get accustomed to leadership styles and theories
that are relate to their nursing practice. Being adept in knowing such leadership theories enabled
me to become a better leader and relate well with my colleagues and other leaders I worked with
(Kelly, & Quesnelle, 2015). I have had some experience with a number of leadership theories
especially those that relate to nursing. Theories that I have had an experience with as a nurse
include: transformational and participative leadership.
Transformational leadership
During my entire experience in the field, in noted that with transformational leadership,
the participation of each individual is key. Leaders harnessing transformational leadership
concepts to lead other health professionals encourage those they lead to be of impact, stay
motivated, be intellectually simulated and do consider their personal opinions. An application of
this leadership theory fosters in the employees commitment and performance (Ceylan, 2018).
Typically, this theory is important in helping individuals change both their thinking and
behavior.
Participative leadership
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 3
I noted that participative leadership style is where a leader encourages all the nurses to
participate in decision making process. In when using this theory, I, as a leader acted as
facilitators of the ideas of the nurses they lead rather than a dictator (Huber, 2017). Nurses who
work under participative leadership are more successful, perform better and are much more
responsible.
What were the leadership characteristics or qualities you witnessed and/or experienced?
Why were they important?
Leadership characteristics that I witnessed include: good communication, excellent
problem solving, conflict resolution, critical thinking, decision making, and power and change
management (Kelly, & Quesnelle, 2015).
In my experience, I learnt that nurses especially leaders should have good problem
solving skills so that they can find effective and efficient solutions to problems that are presented
to them in the field of healthcare. In some instances, there could be conflict between nurses,
leaders or nurses and leaders. Leaders that have conflict resolution skills solve them amicable
and ensure that such conflicts do not become a detriment to the job performance.
In my experience, I was able to note how good communication skills avails power which
is the ability to influence other nurses and health practitioners to work towards set goals and
objectives. Through various interaction with other nurses and leaders, I witnessed that good
communication skills would be needed for communicating both long and short term goals and
objectives (Kelly, & Quesnelle, 2015). Power would then come in to influence all the other
members of the organization to work towards some to goals.
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 4
It was blatant from my experience that Nurses have to work in teams and most often, there arise
the need to solve problems as a team. This means that nurses have got to have high team spirts so
that they can collaborate with all the other members of the teams they work with in order to
ensure that the work they do is top notch. Typically, problem solving and team work in the field
of healthcare are entangled in a unique kind of way that allows the individuals to get the most out
of the teams they work with and healthcare in general.
When performing my daily duties and responsibilities, I noted that Nurses have to be
critical thinkers. This is because most often than not, I had to translate whatever they have learnt
and apply them in solving everyday problems. Besides that, I also had to make choices of
courses of actions among the alternatives presented. Typically, nurses have to be critical thinkers
and must blend this with the decision making skills that allow them to make the best decision
possible from amongst the alternatives at their disposal (Kelly, & Quesnelle, 2015). As a matter
of fact, I observed that this skill is what is most needed in the nursing profession and practice
since nurses have to constantly make decisions and solve problems.
In my experience, we had to undergo regular changes. Specifically, I noted that change is
inevitably brought about by the need to adapt to new methods of care, drugs, regulations and
standards. So, nurses especially leaders are inundated with responsibilities of motivating change,
managing transition and creating a good culture in their organization. All this is done by and
with different teams in the organization. So, in order to effectively manage the much-needed
change, leaders have to first be able to ensure that they have excellent team building strategies.
Explore and describe professional, social, cultural, personal and environmental factors that
may be influencing your leadership development. Explain how and/or why they impacted
your experience. (5 marks)
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 5
I have noted in my experience with leadership in nursing that Leadership development is
a product of a myriad of factors. First, professional aspects of a nurse’s leadership are the key
determinants of individual leadership development. Nurses that have a vast educational
background in leadership and other disciplines are more likely to succeed and become good
leaders (Scott, & Miles, 2013). For me, Professional leadership training enabled me to gain an
insight into how I might use leadership theories or even modify them when dealing with every
day work-related challenges.
My social social environment shaped my leadership since growing up, I was always
thought to make right decisions and relate well with others. Definitely, this has been very
instrumental in shaping my leadership skills in general.
Besides that, my personal experiences also affected how I lead. Since I have been a
leader in my schooling, I had a vast expertise and experience in problem solving, decision
making and conflict management.
In essence, I have noticed that my leadership is a product of myriad factors including the
social environment and background, professional experience and personal experiences. One
aspect that is clear though is that, all those do not exist in abstract, they must be translated into
everyday work experiences in order to make the work environment better (Ceylan, 2018). These
factors blend out together uniquely to avail a kind of leadership that works with people, through
people and still ensure efficient management of resources.
What are your thoughts about the next stage in your education (consolidation), your entry
into the profession, and future career?
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 6
The next stage of my education would be an opportunity to learn more about leadership.
It would definitely provide an experience and insight into how I might apply leadership skills to
solve complex workplace situations. Since it would involve learning new things, it shall serve the
important function of equipping me with new knowledge, skills and experience enabling me to
become a better leader. It would also be a good opportunity to good deeper into leadership and
other aspects such as managing healthcare in the dynamic healthcare environment. This would
also be a good opportunity to learn how I might use leadership skills to successfully lead the
organization through change keeping in mind the dynamic healthcare environment that needs
regular change. Pretty much, the next level of education shall encompass going deeper into
leadership studies and getting to know how to translate what is learnt to practical situations.
How did this experience and/or challenge impact, shape, and change you? How will you
ensure you continue to develop knowledge, skills and leadership qualities to remain
competent?
This experience challenged me to step up my leadership skills. Getting to know how to translate
what I learnt in order to solve everyday situations was very critical in advancing my skills.
Furthermore, it shaped my leadership very much. I not only learnt to apply the theories but also
relate well with other nurses in order to foster the best working environment possible.
In order to remain competent, I would need to go through regular training, learning and
teaching others the art of leadership. This would enable me get new leadership ideas and in turn
practice them by using the gained skills in real life workplace situations (Scully, 2015). The
skills would also be invaluable not only when managing people but also when managing change
in order to transform the organization from the current state of affairs to the desired state.
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 7
Consider consolidation, orientation, working with preceptors, future education and
development in your nursing career. What will you need for in the future of nursing? What
are the leadership skills you need to work on and develop?
Because the healthcare industry undergoes changes continuously, I think the leadership
skills that would be need for the future as a nurse would be contingency leadership skills. These
are skills that enable a leader effectively and skillfully react to everyday situations that are
present in the work environment (Scott, & Miles, 2013). With such skills, I would be able to
adapt to change in the industry while also helping realize the best healthcare. I would also need
to be an innovative nurse. Having skills that foster innovation in the field of nursing is very
benevolent. This is because such skills enable a nurse have what it takes in order to find
immediate solutions to problems. Such nurses also ultimately change the way of doing things by
coming up with new and better ways of care. Definitely, such skills are just what every nurse
would need to survive the dynamic healthcare environment.
What actions and strategies will you implement to be successful in nursing? (6 marks)
In order to become successful in nursing, I would go through regular professional
training, studying widely and even taking an active part in researchers (Hutchinson, & Jackson,
2013). Besides that, I would also consult with all the other players in the field of healthcare.
Doing regular training has proved to be the most effective and efficient tools in
continuously improving one’s nursing skills. Training would enable me as a nurse to get the
exposed to new ways of doing things in the field of nursing, it exposes individuals to recent
researchers, new infections and ways of treating them. This would enable a nurse to get
SELF-REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP SKILL 8
accustomed to the changes in the healthcare field and this is what the nurse need, continuous
improvement.
Studying widely is also one of the most effective ways in which I could become very
successful in nursing. This is because of the fact that reading would equip me with insights into
situations. Nurses who have insights on how to go around when treating a wide array of
conditions are better nurses (Scully, 2015). Besides, the large pools of knowledge that relate to
nursing have invaluable information on how one might come up with better ways of giving care.
A nurse who reads widely becomes a well-seasoned nurse and has better understanding and more
knowledge of how they might perform their jobs (Kelly, & Quesnelle, 2015).
I also think that Consulting widely would enable me to get different points of views on
situations (Porter-O'Grady, 2015). After getting different points of views on given situation I can
then head over to implement them as part and parcel of nursing practice.
