I don’t know for a fact where the chain of accountability in regards to priesthood ends,
but yours is the senior most office in the institution of the Catholic Church, so I will address my
concerns to you. The world is headed back to the dark days if only 31% of Americans hold the
clergy in high regard. The low regard for priests is a slippery slope that will gradually erode the
reach of the gospel and slowly weaken the Christian faith itself. And the world needs religion, as
you well know from theology school and a life dedicated to the gospel. Religion files out the
rougher edges that cause men to take advantage of other men. It treats humanity to treat each
other with consideration and to look up to a better life after death. Basically, the church shapes
the life of believers and atheists aside. Even the bitterest atheist thinks about the origin of man,
divine power, and life after death. These are the building blocks on which the foundation of the
church rests.
The widespread accusations of sexual abuse of children going back 70 years indicates
much laxity in the church you head, a laxity that might just destroy everything your predecessors
worked so hard to build. I don’t know if it is time the Catholic Church reconsidered the vow of
celibacy in the priesthood, but by all indications, this vow looks set to destroy the church itself, it
is also destroying the lives of innocent young boy and girls. This is unacceptable. It is the worst
form of injustice for these pure souls to walk the earth for the rest of their lives with the scars
inflicted upon them by men of the robe- the last people anyone would expect to raise a hand on
anyone else. It is high time you set your affairs in order sir, and you had better do it fast, because
your legacy depends on it. And what’s more, the very fate of the world, not to mention hundreds
or innocent young boys and girls, rests on the actions you take. I hope you take the right one.
