Literature Review on Online Teaching Self-Efficacy
The emergence of technology and aspect of globalization has immensely impacted a
variety of sectors with the healthcare sector is one of the beneficiaries. The continuous
advancement of the aspects of technology continues to influence how activities and operations
are conducted in the industry for purposes of improving efficiency. There are a number of ways
technology continues to impact the sector. However, there still a significant amount of demand
for innovative methods in nursing education as technology continues to expand. Despite the
criticality of the need to embrace online learning by nurses, there is lack of adequate information
and conclusive evidence from empirical studies relating to the faculty efficacy in using
technology for teaching in the online environment. It is due to this that Sally Lightsinger Richter
(2015) conducted a survey with the objective of investigating the competencies of educational
technologies and their efficacy in online teaching.
Nursing practice is experiencing profound changes which place pressure upon changing
the modes of education in nursing. However, nursing, as a practice, is a sensitive discipline that
requires observance of the role nursing play in the entire healthcare sector. There is, therefore,
the need for a suitable evidence-based, yet the innovative and relevant method of education.
There have been a number of propositions from various medical experts in regard to online
teaching tools, methods, and strategies but the challenge comes to the implementation since no
adequate information guarantees the success of such process. Researcher maintains that
incorporating learning technologies in nursing practice would tremendously benefit the practice
as a whole in many different ways. (Richter, 2015)
To fulfil the purpose of the pilot project, Sally L. Richter (2015) adopted a descriptive
correlational research design where the research explored variables with respect to the subject

matter of the study. From the exploration of previously done scholarly resources consisting of
110 studies, which were narrowed down to 31 studies where the researcher eliminated resources
that did not meet the criteria for the study, a number of key observations were drawn that added
value to the objective of the study. Richter (2015) observed that online teaching is a form of self-
efficacy, also, the researcher noted that teaching efficacy can also have an influence on processes
of learning and teaching. As such, according to the investigation, technology is essential in
learning processes of nurses in the modern healthcare environment.
Findings of the research were grouped into three categories; teaching efficacy,
technology competencies in nursing education and barriers and motivational factors. Ritcher
(2015) explains that teaching efficacy was a theme common across the reviewed literary sources.
In accordance to the observations made by the examiner, teaching efficacy is a form of self-
efficacy where a person believes that can be achieved at a given level. On the issue of technology
and competencies in nursing education, the investigator concluded that there is the need to
improve the quality, scale and breadth of online education due to its impact on nursing practice.
lastly, a number of factors were identified in the research that affect the successful
adoption and implementation of effective online education practices. Some of the identified
factors in the investigation include commitment in time, technological failures, lack of personal
relationships with students and lack of enough instruction compensation. However, in
concluding the research project, Ritcher (2015) suggested a number of recommendations for
similar and related studies in the future. These recommendations include conducting more
research studies in regard to the subject matter due to the many gaps that remain in the discipline.
As such, future research projects need to incorporate more educational materials for purposes of
attaining objective data that appropriately fulfils the objectives of the research.
