ANCC's Magnet Model
The role of a healthcare facility in attracting and retaining proficient nurses as one of
the ways of ensuring positive patient outcomes cannot be overemphasized. With this
understanding, the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) instituted a research aimed at
identifying variables that enable a healthcare institution attract and retain professional nurses.
It came up with 14 variables, which it referred to as a ‘magnets.” American Nurses
Credentialing Center (ANCC) would then proceed to develop The Magnet Recognition
Program using AAN’s findings to recognize the nursing excellence. ANCC’s objective was
to develop a framework for the achievement of excellence in the entire nursing practice and
acts as a pathway to various organizations that would seek recognition by the magnet (Aiken
& Poghosyan, 2009). It recently revised the model into a 5-compnent framework, these five
components being; Transformational Leadership; Structural Empowerment; Exemplary
Professional Practice, New Knowledge, Innovation, & Improvements; and Empirical Quality
Results.
The principal of transformational leadership sets the most favorable standards of
support and advocacy with the primary aim of transforming beliefs, values, and behaviors.
This would help position nursing leaders strategically to enable them to have a broader
influence on the stakeholders. This would, therefore, be considered to be a sure strategy of
becoming the market leader. Structural empowerment promotes efficiency in management
and information dissemination within the Magnet-recognized organization. Improved
partnership has been proven to be effectively practical in promoting teamwork and quick
decision making. This is shown by the improved patient outcome as well as health
advancements of the communities served (Messmer & Turkel, 2010). The principal of
exemplary professional practice has been the preference of most patients as these appeals to

the efficiency and effectiveness of care services offered. Provision of comprehensive and
appropriately coordinated care provision by the nurses always results in quality care
provision to the satisfaction of patients. The progressive benchmarking and continuous data
analysis ensures that care provision is improved and maintained o the highest levels.
Acquisition of new knowledge together with aspects of innovation and improvements
guarantees the use of the latest technological innovations towards improving care provision.
Refresher training equips the care givers with the newer and improved means of performing
their tasks. Intensive innovation increases the scope of care provision, and this makes the
Magnet-recognized organizations remain on top of the ladder in care provision. Finally,
empirical outcomes confirm commitment to proper care delivery and effectiveness in care
delivery (Wilson et al., 2015). The empirically verifiable outcomes build more trust and
assurance among patients and increase the number of patients who would prefer these
organizations.
ANCC's Pathway to Excellence Designation Model
The Pathway of Excellence has been rolled out by the American Nurses Credentialing
Centers (ANCC) for measuring essential elements of care provision and nursing practices in
general. To earn the pathway designation, there are various standards that must be met by the
nursing unit. These standards have been developed on the basis of broad inputs from the
experts and extensive research on what would create a positive working environment for
nurses. The standards have been aimed at making nurses work autonomously and execute
their services to the best of their knowledge freely without any form of intimidation or fear.
Aspects of security and protection while on duty bring about confidence and a sense of care
even to the caregiver (Aiken & Poghosyan, 2009). The standards cover the well being of
patients under care. This brings about more trust and comfort, thus improves the recovery
process. Issues of workers’ relations, recruitment, accountability, discipline and other forms

of work ethics that have been covered under these standards ensures professionalism of the
organization.
“Patient Safety and Quality,” an article on the empirical outcome, is based on the
empirical records illustrating the strategy employed by the Magnet hospitals to attract and
retain their professional nurses. The records show reports from primary and secondary data
from some nursing organizations, analyses different sets of variables on the nurse outcomes;
perceptions on care quality, safety climate, mortality and satisfaction rates (Wilson et al.,
2015). The article concludes that the magnet models have demonstrated a great deal of
effectiveness in attracting nurses as well as showing promises of contributing to the
maximum patient outcomes.
