Media and Socialization
1. How Social Media Affect Teens
The internet has had a lot of successes in various fields, but it has also resulted in
negative impact on the young people. Unlike the shows presented in the TV era that
popularized family values modern shows on television and social media platforms focus on
fame. This trend is worrying because children as young as ten years can now access the social
media and post a lot of stuff with the aim of becoming famous and popular by inviting likes and
comments from friends and followers. However, the online life teenagers live in may also have
negative consequences in their lives such as heartbreak, bullying and other negative results.
This situation may lead to a generation that cares less about others is human values are not
included in their social lives (Dani 2017).
2. Socialization in Children and Young Adults
In this video, social workers explain how the social media helps people to develop their
human potential by learning the patterns of their culture and society. The wide range of mass
and social media has proven to be a great teacher for teens. Story books were meant to have a
positive influence on teens especially when shared by an adult, but in the advent of technology,
computers and cell phones have created a mixed feeling on experience the young people get

from them. Social media popularity mostly relies on gossips and negative things done and said
about others (The National 2017). However, social media has also led to positive impacts. For
example, the ‘black lives matter’ movement was successful due to the use of social media.
3. Media and Public Influence
In this clip, the narrator explains how mass media uses social media to pursue the
agenda of controlling what people consume in the mass media basically for profit. This
influence is too much that it has been used to monitor what people need or don’t need in their
lives. The glorification of consumerism culture is now not a preserve of the mass media but a
new crop of influential individuals, groups, and pages on social media that set the tone of
discussion for their members and followers. Through the use of popular social media websites
such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and others, they can shape public opinion on different
situations and incidences in our daily life (Side Track Lolo 2017).
4. Do you know how you think or is it determined by the media?
In this video, Adam Ellis explains how the media have perfected the art of controlling
how people think through consistently communicating a particular message through television,
movies, advertisement, music and social media. In particular, the narrator explains how
glorification of sex by the media has contributed to sexual abuse of women by portraying them
as sex objects. In the movie ‘Old School,' a wedding ceremony is used to discuss very little
about social and family life but illustrate everything about wedding simply from a sexual
perspective. A TV very popular show called ‘Entourage’ the actors glorifies the sex with mortal
women and reveals how women can just be used for sex. In music, a song by Young Money

called ‘Every Girl’ discusses how the singer would like to virtually have sex with all women on
earth (Elsar23 2017). The glorification of sex in mass media reduces the worth of women in
society and reduces them to sex objects and sets the tone of discussion on social media.
5. Social Media in a Conflict Perspective
This video clip explains how the mass and social media influence culture at different
ages and social groups. The narrator considers social media based the role it plays in different
sociological perspectives such as entertainment, socialization, uniting people, enforcing social
norms and promoter of consumerism culture. In a conflict perspective, it reveals how the social
media reflects and portrays the divisions existing in our society based on gender, race, ethnicity
and social class. The narrator uses conflict theory to describe the process how a small group of
people control the materials presented on the newspapers, movie scripts, books, and TV shows.
In some countries, this gatekeeping process may be enforced by the government while in others
the process is controlled by certain individuals with social, political or economic interest on
what the public consumes (Khan Academy 2017). In most cases, people who make choices of
what the media should produce often white, who are politically and economically powerful and
therefore, stories representing the minority groups are often misrepresented or stereotyped. This
conflict approach is aimed at directing people to believe in a dominant ideology.
