SUBJECT: Proofreading
Proofreading is a critical step in every technical writing process. It helps to get rid of errors that
may not have been identified when writing. From the various resources on proofreading, it is
evident that there are various tips that one can use for effective proofreading. For instance,
reading out loud what you have written or asking someone to read it for you as you listen. It is
easier to notice mistakes by hearing as opposed to seeing. A sentence that has an error may look
right to the eye but sound wrong to the ear when it is read out loud.
There are certain proofreading tips that I read in the various resources that are different from the
approaches that I use. For instance, I learnt that when proofreading or editing, it helps to read
your paper from the end to the beginning. It is common practice to proofread from beginning to
the end but doing it in reverse helps to pay more attention to the correctness of individual words
rather than the wholesome meaning of the article.
