The definition of health can mean different things to different people and
organizations. In some cases the definition of health can be subjective and
dependent on the people who are defining it and their specific situation. The most
widely recognized definition of health is the one that is given by the World Health
Organization. According to the World Health Organization "Health is a state of
complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity." Most would assume that the absence of infirmity is an
acceptable definition for health, however, this definition goes even further by
saying it is the state of complete mental, physical and social well being of an
individual that defines true health. Most health care policies and organizations are
satisfied with an individual being free from infirmity and considers this to be good
health. However, when mental , physical and social well being are being taken
into consideration there is a shift in the understanding of what it is for an individual
to possess total health. How an organization defines health greatly influences their
policies and decisions. If an organization believes that the absence of infirmity is
health their goal will be to eradicate physical illness and cure people from any
