Minimum Wage Workers in America
The situation of low wage workers in America is pathetic. Most workers face stressful
moments trying to meet the cost of all their expenses. Despite this, their earning cannot afford a
decent life. The book Nickel and Dimed indicates this situation by showing Ehrenreich personal
experience while working as a low wage earner.
First, people earning low income face the problems of meeting the basic needs. For
instance, Ehrenreich encountered difficulty to find a place to stay. The rental cost was so high
than the wage incomes (Ehrenreich 124). As such, most of her co-workers were forced to live
inside their cars or share rooms in small quarters.
Second, low wage workers in America face the burden of accessing health care services.
Most of their employers do not provide health insurance cover hence they have to use their
meager income to cover for physical and dental services. According to Ehrenreich, after moving
from one job to another, non-provided health insurance cover for minimum wage workers (156).
Taxes cut from low-income people are fatal for their survival. Most of the commodities
that minimum wage earners used are already taxed. Besides, some agents pay their workers less
money to cover the tax burden of the organization. Indeed, this further aggravates the economic
condition of American low-income earners
