Modern Architecture
Modernistic architecture is architectural design styles that emerged in the 20
th
century. It
revolutionized the concept of design and brought in the perspective of simplicity and philosophy
of form following purpose. The new technology in construction made use of glass, steel and
concrete reinforcement that actualized the innovative ideas and advent of modern architecture.
Therefore, review of past renowned architectural styles that based its work on the philosophy of
form ever follows purpose establishes the primary focus of this essay.
The work of Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer in establishing the Fagus shoe factory
between 1911 until 1913 is a clear illustration of the philosophy. Although they had to follow the
ground plan already made by Warner, the overall work of their exterior design was extemporal.
The office façade in particular composed of more glass than brick and the corners were free from
support and brought the concept of curtain walls. The purpose of this new design was to make
the offices conducive by providing more daylight and adequate airflow for the wellbeing of the
workers. Evidently, the new design of the Fagus Shoe factory offices made by Walter Gropius
followed its purpose.
