Multiculturalism: Breaking Prejudice Habits
Most people openly support the need for equality and fairness among all groups of
people. However, many still have the biases and negative images of Latinos, African Americans,
Muslim Americans and other minority groups. Fortunately, I have learnt to apply a major
strategy that helps me to be open and tolerant to those who are prone to prejudice; being aware of
stereotyping. I had come to believe that some people behave in a particular manner since they
belong to a certain ethnicity or race. I believed that my culture is superior and my friends do
things wrongly since they did not conform to my culture. However, the lessons on
multiculturalism have assisted me to break this stereotypic habit. I have deliberately started to
understand the ethnic and cultural background of most of my friends. I feel sad that I have all
along been treating them unfairly. It is immature and unfair to judge people on what you hear
about the culture, race or ethnic group which they belong.
There are many other strategies that can assist me become more open and tolerant to
others. One, I should start seeking more individual information. This strategy will assist me
break stereotyping since I will get to know individual people regardless of their ethnicity or
culture. I will not have to wrongly guess how a person is like nor predict how they are likely to
act. Secondly, I should start looking for commonalities between me and other people from
different cultures. The society we are living in promotes competition with others which leads to
