The Importance of Language
A language is a useful tool in enabling human beings to express their thoughts and
feelings. Effective communication is an essential aspect of daily lives for the success of our
activities. Since the world has become a global village due to technological advancements, it is
essential that we be in a position to communicate with people globally. The need to interact with
people from different races and backgrounds face to face has become more common in the
business world. Therefore, multilingualism is vital in helping us communicate to people of
various cultures and regions. People who are multilingual are better placed in the global world
than their peers who are not.
Children who are multilingual are better placed than their monolingual peers in different
aspects. Multilingual children are more flexible and adaptive in different environments because
knowing more than one language makes them feel at ease. Also, multilingual children are more
open-minded to various issues hence exposing them to more opportunities (De Jong 104). Being
able to interact with people of different cultures helps a child to be more confident around such
people hence improving their self-esteem. Additionally, multilingual children have better social,
analytical, and academic skills. The parent should create a conducive environment for a child to
learn different languages.

Being multilingual enables an individual to view the world in different perspectives
which encourages flexibility in thinking and learning. House (25) states that multilingualism
exposes people to different cultural understanding which makes them more accommodative to
different people. Consequently, it reduces racism, intolerance, and nationalism because the
understanding of other people is deepened and appreciated.
In the employment sector, multilingualism creates more and better job opportunities for
an individual. According to House (27), ability to communicate fluently in multiple languages
increases job security and development opportunities in uncertain financial periods. A
multilingual person has higher chances of getting a job in a foreign country whose languages is
known to them. For example, a doctor who can communicate with a patient in his native
language is capable of diagnosing him successfully. Multilingualism creates better working
conditions.
It is important that we appreciate other languages and learn them to put us at a global
language perspective. Strong language abilities are an advantage in promoting effective
communication.
